It was a slow start for both teams, as shots just didn’t quite fall for two teams that wanted to get up and down on the court. Gill St. Bernard was able to get the first four points but Camden answered right back behind 2023 DJ Wagner, as Camden took an 11-6 first-quarter lead. The offense started to get going a little more for both teams. Camden was able to extend their lead into double-digits and led 31-20 at halftime, with Denver Anglin leading the way for Gill St. Bernards (11pts) and Wagner leading for Camden (9pts).
In the third quarter, Gill St. Bernards started to find their footing and really played scrappy on both ends. They were able to make defensive plays but also finish well inside the arch, making some tough shots. It ultimately helped Gil St. Bernards earn a lead with a few minutes remaining in the third quarter. With the teams trading the lead late, Gill St. Bernards hit a big three late to give themselves a 43-41 lead at the end of the third quarter.
It looked like we had a battle between these two New Jersey programs as we went into the fourth quarter. Early on, Camden really made their mark on the glass, creating second-chance opportunities and being able to capitalize to hold the narrow lead. Coming down to the final minute of the game, a late turnover allowed Gill St. Bernards to cut it down to one with 18 seconds remaining.
Camden was able to knock down two free throws and Gill St. Bernards had a chance to tie it late but 2023 MacKenzie Mgbako was just off in the corner and Camden sealed the game 57-55.
Standouts:
2023 DJ Wagner (Camden): Ranked as the No. 1 player in 2023 and he showed why, displaying a tremendous ability in creating with the dribble. He is such a shifty prospect, playing with a great change of speed and pace/ really sees and reads the floor well, but can also be a big-time scorer from all levels. Wagner led the charge in this one and really showcased his IQ and feel for the game.
2022 Denver Anglin (Gill St. Bernard): The Georgetown commit quickly grabbed our attention with his pure-shooting motion, as he can really make opponents pay with his outside game and his confidence in his one-dribble pull-up game. The Hoyas have a good shot-maker coming their way.
2023 Aaron Bradshaw (Camden): The 7-footer plays with such a great motor and never gives up, as he made several plays on the boards, used his length to be effective on both ends of the court, he ran the court with a ton of energy and displayed his ability to face-up and knock down shots. Still room to develop but good showing from the big man.
2023 Geancarlo Peguero (Gill St. Bernards): Peguero might not be the star of this team but did he step up and produce. He played with terrific effort and energy, really making those hustle plays, getting on the boards, finishing through contact, and making some big shots to give his team a chance. The junior stepped up big.
