Early in February, Phenom Hoops got a chance to watch some premier talent on the court from Georgia, as Cumberland Christian came into town. It provided us a chance to watch 2023 6’5 Jelani Hamilton, who is rising up the ranks in the state of Georgia. He is one of the clear leaders for his team and high-major programs are noticing.
We caught up with the junior prospect to learn more about the season, his development, and what has been going on lately with his recruitment.
Phenom: How has everything been going as far as basketball this season for you and your team?
Hamilton: It started off great, then as of recently we’ve had a slump because of COVID but we are looking to have a great comeback.
Phenom: How have you grown as a player over the last year or so?
Hamilton: Most definitely I’ve matured mentally and physically.
Phenom: What areas of your game have you worked on and do you think you have improved in?
Hamilton: I’ve worked a lot on my playmaking, just making the right decision consistently. I’ve improved most on my pick-and-roll decisions.
Phenom: How would you best describe your game on the court and how do you like to operate?
Hamilton: I would describe my game as a team player, I’ll always do what is best for my team and get my teammates involved. I like to operate under pressure honestly because I feel like the game just gets slower while under pressure.
Phenom: Have really been earning some recognition in your state, as one of the premier talents for that class. What is that like to get that recognition these days?
Hamilton: It feels great, really just seeing that all the hard work is getting recognized means a lot but it is just the start.
Phenom: What has been going on with your recruitment these days?
Hamilton: Colleges from everywhere are getting in contact with me. My most recent offer is from Ole Miss. I hold offers from Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Old Dominion, Ole Miss, and Alabama.
Phenom: What are your thoughts on your most recent offer from Ole Miss?
Hamilton: They are a great program. Me and Coach Hamilton talk often.
Phenom: What are your thoughts on Georgia Tech?
Hamilton: I like them, they have a great program. The coaching staff is amazing, they are probably the most in contact with me.
Phenom: How about Alabama?
Hamilton: Same thing as Georgia Tech, just not as much in contact.
Phenom: What other schools have been showing interest your way but have yet to offer?
Hamilton: Georgia, Auburn, Tulane, USF, Clemson, and Western Carolina.
Phenom: Have you been able to visit any schools?
Hamilton: Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Alabama, and Old Dominion.
Phenom: Any future visits you have planned?
Hamilton: Ole Miss but no date.
