This past season really helped 2021 6’5 Glenn Bynum Jr. grow as a player. Playing at Carmel Christian under one of the top coaches in high school basketball, Bynum has continued to transition and improve his game over and is hoping to get back on the court soon.

Bynum’s work consisted of changing his shooting hands and showing that he is one of the better two-way guards in the state. Phenom Hoops went one-on-one with the rising senior to get the latest around his focus, his game, and his recruitment.

Check out what he had to say.

PHR: How did this past season go for you and what were you hoping to show with your game on the court' What areas of improvement do you think you have made over the last year'

This past season went well. It didn’t end with us winning a state title as I had hoped it would but I learned a lot throughout the year. On an individual level, I transitioned from being a left-handed shooter to shooting with my right. I had hoped to show that I’m one of the top 2-way performers in my class. Probably my biggest area of improvement over the past year was on the defensive side with my on-ball defense. My coach would usually assign me the opponents’ best scorer each game. I also feel that I have improved my ability to score from 3 levels — particularly inside the perimeter.

PHR: This off-season is a big one for you. What is your mentality once we get back on the court and what are you really looking to show' What areas are you also looking to show'

My mentality once getting back on the court is to show that I’m one of the most slept on players in NC. I want to be able to show that I can play above the rim and that my perimeter game is wet. I also want to show that I’m a complete team player and want to be the energy source that my teammates draw from throughout the game. I want to demonstrate that I can be the one that others play off of without being selfish. I’m looking to show a better consistency in my scoring than in the past years. In the past, I would have a string of double-figure games and then have another string of non-double figure games.

PHR: How would you best describe your game' How do you attack and how do you try to impact the game'

I’d say I’m a complete team player with a high basketball IQ, high motor, and above-average skill set. I would say my attack and impact on the game has been as an efficient scorer and making hustle and winning plays.

PHR: What has been going on as far as recruitment'  Princeton and West Point have reached out. What have they been saying your way and have you been able to learn any more about those programs'

Most recently I have heard from West Point and Princeton. Prior to the staff change at UNCW, I had been in pretty consistent contact with them. Elon had also reached out earlier in the season. Most of the coaches I have spoken to like my ability to play at and above the rim as well as my energy on both ends of the court.

PHR: You mentioned UNCW and Elon showed interest in the past.  Have you continued to stay in touch with those staffs'

I haven’t really been in contact with either of those programs as of late. It was the old staff at UNCW that I had been in contact with. However, Coach Joe, my high school coach, has said that he has spoken to the new staff at UNCW and that they will make a visit to our gym at Carmel once we can get back on the court.

PHR: When you speak to the coaches, what do they say they like about your game'

Other than my energy and willingness to play both ends they mostly talk about their programs and how I would be a good addition to them. Princeton has said that they would like me to take a visit once everything opens up to meet the team and see the campus.
