Last week I took a little drive outside of the city limits to Stanly County to check out a big time rivalry matchup between North Stanly and West Stanly. The gym was sold out about 30 minutes before the tip off and the court was filled with next level talent on both sides of the ball. West Stanly got the win at home by the score of 65-55, here are some players to watch.

6’6 2019 Hayden Greene: West Stanly High School (16 Pts, 11 Reb)

Hayden Greene wast he epitome of consistency throughout the contest in this one. The strong bodied 6’7 big man showed some serious skill by knocking down 14 footer after 14 footer, coming up with timely jumpers for his team as well as getting some put-backs on the glass. He’s an incredibly solid front-court presence on both ends of the court and he did this with Pfeiffer, Guilford, and Catawba all watching along. He will excel at the D3 level as one of those guys that is willing to put his body on the line to make the given play. He’s an incredible asset to a really intriguing West Stanly team.

6’2 2021 Austin Medlin: West Stanly High School (23 Pts, 6 Reb, 3 Ast)

Austin Medlin was someone that I have simply never heard of until attending this contest and he thoroughly impressed me with his fearlessness and ability to get downhill and collapse the North Stanly defense. He’s a pure three level scorer that was unstoppable going right all night long, making defenders pay with his ability to create for himself. He should be playing real AAU basketball for the first time this summer, and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least bit to see him earn a scholarship at the end of the day. A great player, and an even better team guy.

5’10 2019 Bryson Childress: North Stanly High School (28 Pts, 7 Stl, 6 Reb, 5 Ast)

The weight of the entire team was on Bryson Childress’ shoulders and he still found a way to give his team a chance to win with their 2nd leading scorer out and 3 key players coming back from football with one basketball practice under their belt. He didn’t shoot the ball very efficiently but still had some incredible moments both from the perimeter and attacking the basket. He plays with an unprecedented level of swag, and is one of the most electric players at the high school level I’ve ever seen. He’s on that D2/D1 fringe in my mind and could excel at the right fit if he ends up going Division one. If you have a chance to check him out… please do, it will be more than worth your time.
