If you have missed some of the latest news surrounding the transfer portal and recruiting world, UMass has landed two North Carolina prospects in the last week or so. Actually, the two once were high school teammates at Chambers High School in North Carolina, and they look to be the start of something special up north now.
2023 Jaylen Curry recently announced his commitment to UMass, while also landing South Carolina transfer Daniel Sanford. These were the leaders at Chambers high school back in the 2021-22 season, as Curry was leading the way in scoring, averaging 16.6ppg, 9.1apg, and 2.9spg while Sanford wasn’t far behind in averaging 16.5ppg, 7.9rpg, and 1.0bpg. They were part of a tough, dynamic duo for the Cougars, and now they will be looking to do the same at the collegiate level together.
Head coach Frank Martin and his staff are very familiar with the two, as they also recruited them back when they were at South Carolina. And it seems that the relationship they were able to build with both went a long way in securing two big-time talents for the coming years. And when you dive more into what has been said about their game, there is a lot of excitement with this program.
Daniel Sanford
“One of the premier players in the state for the class of 2022, Sanford certainly checks a lot of boxes with his game and should be able to impact the floor in an array of ways. First off, he is built like a football player, bringing a physical stature and game to the floor but also moving extremely well for his size. That allows him to operate on multiple levels, run the floor, finish at the rim with authority, and play with a physical attitude on both ends of the floor. And he has continued to improve in areas of stretching his game out along the perimeter. Sanford should be able to play and operate from several areas of the floor…”

Jaylen Curry
“2023 Jaylen Curry (Calvary), one of the top unsigned seniors, is a familiar name with us at Phenom Hoops, so it was good to see him back in action. Though it was a tough night knocking down shots, Curry continues to blow you away with his playmaking ability. Elite speed and burst on the court, does a great job in knifing through the defense and finding ways to score around defenders and does an excellent job in seeing the floor and finding his teammates.”
