The state of North Carolina is blessed with an over abundance of talent. In the North Carolina 2018 class, 60 plus players signed with D1 schools and another 40 plus signed to play at the D2, D3, NAIA or Juco level. Quite impressive numbers! This year, the 2019 class is on the same course to have 100 plus players continue to play at the collegiate level. In our unsigned senior spotlight, we want to take a closer look at D1 prospect 6’8 PF Nick Evtimov. Evtimov checks in at no. 35 in our most recent North Carolina 2019 rankings. https://www.phenomhoopreport.com/rankings/2019-north-carolina-rankings/
We’ve watched Nick Evtimov countless times during his high school basketball career; most recently at the Phenom National High School Showcase where he earned back to back game MVP honors. We’re talking about strong physical power forward that plays with a high motor, brings grit, toughness, energy, passion, and a blue-collar work ethic to the team. First of all, Evtimov has excellent hands, nifty footwork in the post, and has a unique ability to score near or under the rim.
More importantly, Evtimov has worked extremely hard in the off season. He has slimmed down, gotten physically stronger, and as added fluidness to his game. Always known for his tough rugged approach on the boards, Evtimov will battle you tooth and nail for loose balls, rebounds and simply making hustle plays that are instrumental to the team. He doesn’t demand the ball and once he receives the ball in the post, he is patience and a willing passer. He is constantly working hard to establish excellent low post position and is tremendous at setting ball screens where he rolls properly and correctly to the rim.
Coach Freddy Johnson stated that Evtimov has been on a double double tear in his past five games where he has averaged 10.0 PPG and 10.0 RPG. Coach Johnson said the following. “Nick can really score and pass around the rim. More importantly, he is willing to sacrifice his body and take a charge.” Simply put, what’s not to like about a tough, team oriented, and selfless young man that plays the game the right way. He’s a definite low risk, high return prospect who games translates well at the D1 level.
