This season John Meeks averaged 16 points and 7 boards per game. He was named Conference Player of the Year and was the best player of a team who has gone 65-2 and won a state championship over the past two years. Yet with all of these accomplishments and as good of a player as he is, many have still not heard of him.
Meeks is a 3.7 student at The Burlington School. A 1A private school nestled into Burlington, North Carolina. The lefty has had a lot of high school success, and he has continually gotten better year over year. Meeks certainly doesn’t pass the look test, however the second he steps on the floor all of that goes out the window and you’re immediately drawn to his production.
During the North Carolina Top 80, Meeks was matched against his best peers throughout the state of North Carolina. There was no more excuses about his team being so good or his competition being so bad, there was no hiding against 80+ other D1 prospects. As the camp ended, we are not sure if the word hiding exists in Meeks’ vocabulary.
Many of the people watching were asking, “Who is the white kid getting all the tip back dunks'” Meeks was good for at least three (3) per game. However, it was not only his explosion that led to these, it was his non-stop motor and excellent timing. Meeks works so hard off the ball, he gets to dangerous spots on the floor and attacks.
Meeks was also able to answer any questions about his position. Meeks is a true wing. He was able to defend the ball with a high IQ and motor. On offense, Meeks attacked the rim off the bounce and was also able to consistently knock down jump shots from beyond the arc, and from the mid-range.
While he has been on a steady climb, his performance at the North Carolina Top 80 could truly be pin pointed as his break out. Watch him closely over the summer with Pro Skills Basketball and see a little interest turn into a lot of offers.
