PLAYER: JOSH SPELLMAN

Class: 2018

HT: 6'3, 160 pounds

Personal: Josh is the son of former Indian River HS basketball coach and current athletic director Freddie Spellman. Coach Spellman was Alonzo Mourning's junior varsity coach at Indian River HS.

High School: Oscar Smith HS, Chesapeake VA

HS Coach Evaluation: Josh Spellman is a young athletic talent, he works really hard. He is what you call a gym rat. We have really been impressed the way he has been extremely vocal in off season workouts. I think the work he has put in this summer with his overall game will translate into a great high school season. Last year Josh learned a lot playing against All Tidewater talents Donald Hicks and Dez Devane in practice. His role this year will expand. He was relegated last year as a situational player as he learned the Oscar Smith system. We are expecting big things from Josh Spellman!!!

AAU Team: Team Loaded 757 – Claiborne

AAU Statistics: 10.8 ppg, 11 rpg

AAU Coach Evaluation: Josh Spellman is a walking double double! We call him “Bounce”, he's one of the main reasons this team is ranked in most national polls. He rebounds and defends relentlessly. Will take the opposing teams best player out of the game completely. Also he has a sweet mid range shot and when the ball is in the air you better box out because he will go up and get it and score, often with a put back dunk!

Coach Frank says: Josh is one of the most athletic players in the 757! He has a 42' vertical, quick feet and a lanky frame with a 6'5 wingpan! To give you an idea of his jumping ability, in a recent practice at Oscar Smith HS he went to block a shot and hit his head on the backboard! Josh has a very good handle and is a crafty playmaker who is most dangerous off the bounce using his long, wiry frame to negotiate his way through traffic and get to the rim. He is an excellent finisher, able to play through contact and finish often with a thunderous dunk! Josh can also pull up and hit the mid range jumper with very good consistency. A basket attacking, bucket getting guard, Josh is also able to get his teammates involved and is a good passer. He plays with great energy and enthusiasm, most evident on the defensive end where he is a long armed, quick footed relentless defender who prides himself on getting stops. Obviously with all his physical attributes and great motor, Josh stays active and rebounds the basketball at a high level on both ends. He is a terrific offensive rebounder not only because of his great bounce but because he reads the ball well coming off the rim and beats people to spots. He has explosive lift off the ground and excellent repeat jumping ability. He is a knowledgeable player, the benefit of being a coach's son, communicates and brings great competitive energy which carries over to his teammates. I'm very excited about his basketball future as Josh has all the intangibles. He is talented, oozes with athleticism, has a high IQ and an obvious enthusiasm for competing. The sky is the limit for this high flying up and comer!
