Given the changes throughout college sports, countless players enter the transfer portal every year. Many leave their current situation to reach new heights or attempt to reestablish themselves at a different level. Among the latest additions to the portal is Khamani Wertz of Belmont-Abbey. Folks will also likely remember him from his days at Carmel Christian, where he played a vital role for a notable Cougars squad. Before highlighting his production from this season, let’s look at what we’ve previously said…
Our own Rick Lewis previously stated, “Nursing a pulled hamstring, that didn’t stop Wertz from showcasing his value to this team. The southpaw has the ability to knock down 3-pointers with a high rate of accuracy and will be called upon during the course of the season to hit “big time” shots, especially since Carmel will probably face zone or junk defenses this season. In addition, Wertz has improved immensely as a defender and has the ability to pressure the opposing player 94 feet. Wertz has “quick rhythm” hands on defense and will also be one of the team’s primary ball handlers.”
Shortly thereafter, Wertz found his footing and proved his value. He received an offer from the Crusaders and committed following the high school season. Regarding his college numbers, Wertz is coming off a productive year averaging 15.0 PPG, 2.1 RPG, and 3.0 APG with 39/46/86 shooting splits. Although three-point shooting arguably remains his most valuable trait, it’s easy to see how he’s developed as a creator, scorer, and playmaker for others. He should appeal to a variety of programs as someone who can dictate the action, knock down shots, and defend at the point of attack. Wertz is capable of playing either backcourt spot and finding success. Sometimes a change of scenery can maximize a player’s abilities, so it’ll be interesting to see if that happens with Wertz at his new home.
