It is always great to see a player continue to develop and improve their game at the next level, taking advantage of the opportunities that are available for them.  One player that has taken a huge leap from last year to this year has been Winthrop’s Kelton Talford, who is posting terrific numbers to start the season.

The 6’7 junior forward played in 31 games last year, averaging 17.0 minutes, 8.5 points, and 4.9 rebounds per game, having a strong sophomore campaign. That is coming off a strong freshman season as well.

But as a junior, Talford is showing it all this season and taking full advantage of the opportunity that is ahead of him, as he is posting averages of 28 minutes, 17.8 points, and 7.8 rebounds per game.  The South Carolina prospect has been incredibly effective, shooting 75.6 percent from the floor, showing off his motor and impact around the basket, his energy on the boards, and showing just strong of a scorer he can be.

The Big South has been an incredible conference when it comes to talent, and Talford is showing why he was such a sneaky grab for Winthrop when he was coming out of South Carolina years ago.

What Was Said by Phenom Hoops:

“He’s a long, rangy forward prospect with great athleticism and versatility on both ends of the floor. Talford scores effortlessly from anywhere inside the arc and is quite efficient as a shooter from three-point territory. He possesses an excellent frame, motor, and feel for his skill set, making him a nightmare for most opponents. Defensively, Talford is a monster, given his ability to seamlessly guard three positions at a high level. He’s able to apply pressure as a perimeter defender or protect the rim, which is very rare and simply adds to Talford’s uniqueness as a prospect. He also focuses on doing the little things, from rebounding to hustling, and displayed phenomenal leadership qualities throughout camp. Next in his development process is continuing to refine his shooting off the dribble, as it would make him a dominant two-way player. Coach Staley on Talford: “Kelton has a great motor, attitude, and skillset. He’s very athletic and can score the ball at all three levels. He has a very good post game and finishing ability.” – SC Top 80 in 2018

“Talford is a hot name among regional low-mid majors due to his combination of touch, size, athleticism, and defensive potential.  He’s a mobile combo forward that could conceivably defend 4 positions on the floor due to his lateral quickness.  His footwork on the block is impeccable, and he should become an even bigger name among MM coaches after the live period.” – Miles Masercola from Champion Showcase in 2019

“Talford is an interesting talent, a unique two-way player who can defend across 3 positions and is a matchup nightmare on the offensive end. He has great length and athleticism and is a virtual lock for 25 and 12 each game.” – Phenom Hoops at Queen City Showcase in 2019
