Projecting title contenders in high school basketball is an interesting exercise, especially within the public-school ranks. Each year, scouts, players, and spectators generate discussion prior to the season as to who will claim the top spot, but the games still have to be played. Plenty of people were ready to go ahead and give the championship trophy out at the start of the season. Things quickly change and folks are forced to reassess their prediction for the who's who of the NCHSAA 4A Classification. We will take a short look at a few of the current contenders who have made noise throughout the early months of the high school season.

Myers Park (1-1; Lost to Chambers)

The clear-cut preseason title favorite, Myers Park came into the year with all the pieces in place to contend for a championship. Although they've already suffered a stunning defeat to Chambers, it's no cause for panic. For starters, they still have one of the most talented rosters in the state. The grouping of Bishop Boswell, Sir Mohammed, Elijah Strong, Sadiq White, Sam Walters, Santana Lynch, and Kaamil Domingo form an incredibly strong rotation. Despite their early loss, there's a very real scenario where the Mustangs don't lose for the next month. They have a variety of challenging opponents along the way, but Myers Park taking on Carmel Christian (1/14) should ultimately serve as a great litmus test for both squads. Don't be surprised if we look back at the start (or end) of the playoffs and question why anyone ever doubted this team.

North Mecklenburg (4-0)

It should come as no surprise to see the Vikings appear on any list of noteworthy teams, as they always find themselves in the mix. Despite graduating numerous key pieces, North Meck has made a seamless transition into their new identity behind the leadership of Isaiah Evans. Through four games, they have beaten opponents by an average of 47.5 points'a truly insane point differential regardless of the challenger. Although the 6-foot-7 wing is clearly their star, this group has a slew of talent with guys like Christian Foy, Ashton Pierce, Trey Maxwell, Demoris Jenkins, Tayvion Roach, and Grey Murray each make a nightly impact for the Vikings. Despite having a tough schedule, it's difficult to envision an outcome where this group isn't one of the top two or three teams in the NCHSAA 4A standings.

Holly Springs (3-1; Lost to John Marshall)

It's rare to watch a team suffer a loss and walk away even more optimistic than before, but that's exactly what happened in Holly Springs' showdown against John Marshall (at our Tyler Lewis Hoop Fest). While the players were likely disappointed in the outcome, it only further solidified the Golden Eagles' ability to compete with anyone. Though their opponent came from Virginia, it's unclear if any team in their NCHSAA classification is definitively better. Guys like Micah Jones, Collin Kuhl, Ryan Crotty, Houston Wills, Will James, and Jake Cackovic form a lethal, chemistry-laden rotation of smart, tough players with clearly defined roles. Like normal, this group will play some of the top public-school competition Raleigh has to offer. That being said, the Golden Eagles should be the favorite in every one of their games in the regular season.

Millbrook (3-1; Lost to The Burlington School)

Forming a list of contenders without including Millbrook just doesn't feel right. Between their current roster and long-standing history of success, folks would be wise to keep a close eye on the Wildcats. Their duo of Jayan Walker and Colt Langdon have been putting forth high-level production across the board as the nightly leaders of this team. However, Gabe Cerda, Jacob Lawton, Blake Bartney, and Kyrie Heredia each make a lasting impression. While they might not have as much traditional depth as some of the other teams, they know their identity as well as anyone'if not better. Their upcoming contests against Northwood (12/17) and John Marshall (12/21) will be strong indicators for where this group currently stands.
