The 2nd Annual Indy Top 80 will take place Sunday, October 2nd at Westfield High School. Today, our feature coach today is Coach Shane Sumpter. Coach Sumpter is in his second year as the boys varsity basketball coach at Westfield. Coach Sumpter lead the Rocks to a double digit win season, which was the first in many years. The Rocks also lead the conference in defensive efficiency during the 2015-16 season. Coach Sumpter compiled a 137-46 record in eight seasons in his tenure as a girls head coach, including a 122-36 mark in seven seasons at Westfield.

Sumpter guided the Lady Rocks to a 21-3 record and a sectional title in 2012-13, the second sectional crown of his tenure. His squad also cut sectional nets in 2010.

A graduate of Frankton High School and Anderson University, Sumpter began his coaching career as a girls’ basketball assistant for three seasons at Frankton where he helped guide the Eagles to two semi-state appearances. He then was a boys basketball assistant for one season at Westfield before moving to Anderson as a boys basketball assistant for six seasons. In his tenure coaching at the Anderson Wigwam, Sumpter helped guide the tribe to a combined six year record of 104-35, two NCC, a sectional, and Hall of Fame Championship.

Sumpter then moved back to the girls’ game, becoming the Anderson girls’ head coach for one season where he led the Lady Tribe to an NCC conference and Sectional Championship in 2007-08. He became the Westfield girls’ coach in 2008-09, and the Lady Rocks posted seven consecutive winning seasons and have consistently ranked in the state’s top-five defensively.

Sumpter was selected Indy North Coach of the Year in 2010, and he was chosen Hamilton County Coach of the Year in 2013. Sumpter also was picked as ICGSA District 3 Coach of the Year in 2013.
