Huss in impressive win

Phenom Hoops travelled to Hickory, North Carolina to cover the matchup between Gastonia Huss and Hickory High School. Huss came into the contest with a 11-1 record while Hickory sported a 10-2 record. After a competitive first quarter, it was all Huss as they utilized a balanced attack and secured an impressive 84-51 win.

The storyline for the game was twofold. First, Huss has balance and depth as nine players got into the scoring column with four players scoring in double digits. Leading the way was 6'2 Fayetteville State signee Tyrese McNeal with 18 points. 6'2 senior Deneil Mackins contributed 15 points, while 5'8 senior Kendall Corry and 5'7 freshman JJ Moore both chipped in 13 points.

Second, Huss played tenacious and aggressive team defense, but more importantly played extremely hard. In addition, we were impressed with their unselfish play and the ability to make the 'pitch ahead' pass as their defense created turnovers and transition points. Three players, Deneil Mackins, JJ Moore, and Dontavius Nash all dished out five assists.

6'2 Senior Tyrese McNeal (Huss)

The Fayetteville State signee proved his value and worth in the win over Hickory. McNeal finished with a game high 18 points. We were impressed with his poise and presence on both sides of the ball. Defensively, he has excellent lateral movement, quick hands and great anticipation of the passing lanes. While he's best going downhill, McNeal also has the ability to step out and knock down perimeter shots.

6'2 Senior Deneil Mackins (Huss)

Mackins finished with 15 points and dished out five assists. His game is balanced and consistent as he has both touch and range, knocking down two 3-pointers and having the ability to draw contact and fouls. In addition, Mackins brings a tough, blue-collar approach to the game on both ends of the court.
