In one weekend, Phenom Hoops will officially begin our annual Hoopstate Fall League. Previously, games were hosted at Cox Mill and JD Lewis Center, but Rise Indoor Sports will also be added to the mix this year. Between three separate venues, kids from several different areas will have the opportunity to compete against other notable programs as they prepare for the upcoming high school season. Leading up to the preseason contests, we will preview some of the teams registered to attend—looking at Weddington High School.

It probably goes without saying, but the Warriors are consistently among the most underrated teams in the state. Even as key pieces depart, they still manage to more than stay afloat. After an incredibly productive junior season, KJ Younger will clearly be the focal point and undisputed leader of this group. His combination of size, strength, and versatility immediately makes him a real mismatch for the vast majority of high school opponents. In addition to Mason Zepp’s bigger role, Weddington has a slew of guys who should excel as complementary pieces. Lastly, the coaching pairing of Gary Ellington and Jeremy Ford remains one of the best across all classifications in North Carolina. Expect them to surprise folks.
