The high school season will be quickly approaching but it also gives a chance to look back at the past. The Class of 2025 is shaping up nicely here in North Carolina, as several players have been garnering the attention of college coaches. But there are three players that I personally believe could be hidden gems for D1 schools, and they could see their recruitment take off more with another strong season. Here are three prospects I would have my eyes on more in North Carolina.
2025 6’4 KJ Younger (Weddington)
Younger is one that Phenom Hoops has been on more than anyone around the state, starting years ago when we watched him in limited playing time to where he is today. It is clear that Younger is a D1 talent that simply produces. It may not always be flashy, and it may look easy at times, but Younger just knows how to get things done on the court and he knows where he excels. Having a strong, football-like frame allows him to simply bully opponents on the court but he also has added more to show he can be effective from a variety of levels. Game after game last season he proved that he can be a force, as you just have to let him operate the way he does. Though he holds a few D1 offers already, that list should continue to grow in what we believe will be another huge season for the 6’4 prospect.
2025 6’6 Trajan Thompson (Providence Day)
Thompson is a very interesting prospect in the Class of 2025; we have noted on several occasions that this is a hidden gem in the state and he offers a lot to the table. Unfortunately this summer, we didn’t get much of a chance to watch Thompson in action but it is still clear that this is a young man who deserves more attention and could be a great get in the future. Thompson’s size and versatility offer a lot on the court, impacting the game on both sides, can be an effective scorer off the bounce and with his length, makes high IQ plays, uses his athleticism really well, and can be a stat-stuffer on the court. Thompson offers a lot and we are excited about seeing him soon; he holds D1 offers already but he could see more of an uptick this upcoming season.
2025 6’3 Johnniyus Sharpe (Reidsville)
Lastly, a player that left a lasting impression on us this summer was 2025 6’3 Johnniyus Sharpe, as he clearly has elevated his level to another level and should be garnering attention from D1 schools. If you missed our coverage of Sharpe, you can read it here: https://www.phenomhoopreport.com/2025-63-johnniyus-sharpe-reidsville-elevating-his-game-to-another-level/
Sharpe has been playing with a chip on his shoulder and he has proven his game, as he was assertive with his offensive game, getting to his spots, attacking strong off the bounce, creating exceptionally well, and filling it up as a scorer. He really showed how effective he can be as a scorer, hurting you inside and out, and has a confident release from all levels of the court. Sharpe has been out to prove himself and that he did this summer, as he made it known that he should be on many D1 radars.
