We’ve seen a lot of players come through our doors over the years, varying in appearance, skill level, and everything in between. We decided to put forth a “Getting to Know” series on some players who have attended events but still remain on the lesser-known side of things. Each of these prospects embody being a student-athlete and getting it done in the classroom as well as on the basketball court, and today’s edition will take a closer look at Maxwell Coles of North Meck.
We’ve seen Coles in every possible setting, including at our previous All-American camp, where we stated, “Next, we look at a player that easily stood out as one of the most impressive scorers in attendance, Maxwell Coles. He’s a smart, crafty, well-rounded guard prospect with the necessary instincts to effortlessly create scoring opportunities from all three levels. Coles can initiate the offense, set up others, or simply carry the offensive load for periods at a time. He moves well without the ball to find open space, both as a cutter and spot-up threat. Coles’ understanding of timing and defenses allow him to pick his spots and access basically whatever shot he chooses. Next in his development process is working on his consistency as a three-point shooter, as it would make him even tougher to contain for opponents. Coach Black on Coles: “Maxwell was our most reliable scorer and showed the ability to create shots whenever we needed them. He played hard on both ends of the floor. Maxwell was very useful in a variety of roles and displayed a positive attitude throughout the weekend. I enjoyed coaching him.” Coles has been quite consistent over the last few months and furthered his quality play at camp, averaging 17 PPG, and should be able to carve out a solid role for North Meck during the upcoming season. “
Since then, Coles has only continued to solidify himself as an obvious college-level player. He maintained his straightforward, consistent identity with the Vikings, regularly shining with his reliable scoring arsenal and ability to produce in various different roles. Coles does a terrific job of applying efficient scoring pressure from all levels, but can also assume some creation duties and set up others as needed. He’s a useful defender and rebounder for his position, and contains his assignment well on that end of the floor. Additionally, Coles possesses IQ and the well-rounded skillset to make an impact in all facets of the game. Various college programs should be involved going forward.
