Getting to Know: 5’10 2021 Daunta Hagler (Oceanside Collegiate)
We have seen Daunta Hagler several times, camp settings, travel ball and high school. One thing that is quite evident, no matter the venue, no matter the setting, Hagler has left a lasting impression on us. At last year’s SC Top 80, Hagler showcased his all-around ability and proved he is one to watch. We stated, “Hagler is a strong-bodied guard prospect with the ability to set the tone on either end of the court. Hagler plays physical, but also displays a very nice feel for the game, which allows him to operate as a primary creator with relative ease. He plays with a high motor, pursues every available rebound, knocks down shots from all levels and was able to contain multiple positions on defense.”
At the Phenom Summer Havoc, Hagler once again left a big impression, but this time was more for his defensive prowess. We stated, “Hagler is built like a tank. Hagler uses his size, strength and tenacity to intimidate his assignments. I saw numerous times the ball-handler quickly give the ball up just so they wouldn’t have to defend them. Hagler don’t take many gambles on the defensive end he just a sound on ball defender who will be in your face all game.”
At the Carolina Showcase, we stated, the following about Hagler. “We love his attitude and coachability. He passes with precision and closed out on shooters. Daunta muscled by his man to get to the basket at will throughout the day. He’s a top defender, especially in transition. He definitely has a future in the game of basketball.
This past season for Oceanside Collegiate, Hagler averaged 10.3 PPG and 5.5 APG and is currently getting interest from Erskine College. While most may question his size as a point guard at the collegiate level, Hagler plays much bigger than his listed height. He has the strength, athleticism and speed that will make him one difficult player to guard and contain. More importantly, Hagler is the type of player you win with. He takes tremendous pride on the defensive side of the ball and never backs down from a challenge.
