Although Surry County isn't typically known for their basketball talent, we've definitely seen some impressive players over the years. Jefferson Boaz (East Surry) has probably been the most popular and decorated athlete of the last five seasons, but guys like Carter Phillips and Mason Hawks (North Surry) were also extremely talented and previously made for one of the most electric, efficient pairings in the state. Now, Caden Fitzgibbons has a chance to be the next star from Mount Airy High School.

Despite being widely under the radar, Fitzgibbons was already the clear leader as a sophomore for the Granite Bears. He's a long, bouncy guard prospect with quick-twitch tendencies and a fairly well-rounded skillset. Fitzgibbons is a crafty ball-handler with the ability to create his own shot or set up others when attacking downhill. He's a great finisher with either hand, and often looks to finish above or through the opposition. Fitzgibbons is tougher than opponents seem to think on both ends of the floor. He's a committed defender and quality rebounder that simply knows how to make his presence felt in transition.

Our most recent viewing of Fitzgibbons came at NC Phenom 150 Camp, where we stated, 'Next, we look at a player that is truly just beginning to scratch the surface of his long-term abilities, Caden Fitzgibbons. He's a long, wiry guard prospect with a phenomenal blend of IQ, skill, and unexpected explosiveness. Fitzgibbons continuously stood out as a leader and versatile two-way player with his ability to consistently affect all facets of the game. Next in his development process is working to add strength, as it'll only make him tougher to contain on both ends of the floor. Coach Shickel on Fitzgibbons: 'Caden was a standout performer that shined through with his hustle and aggression on both ends of the floor. He has a great IQ and was the winner and competitor that our team leaned on to set the tone and tempo. He always plays with great pace, craft, handle, and proved to be a creative finisher'including his euro-step. Caden is a solid shooter from midrange and three-point territory but needs to improve the deep threes for the next level. He's a winner, fierce competitor, and one to keep on the radar. He has a promising future and was a pleasure to coach.' Fitzgibbons was easily among the most enticing prospects at camp and will be one to watch closely over the next few years.'

The Granite Bears finished with a 15-10 record and found themselves second in conference play. While there were various contributors, their success is thanks, in large part, to Fitzgibbons. As a sophomore (one of only two on the roster), he led the team in scoring, rebounding, and steals while shooting 50% from the floor. He seems almost good to be true, but it's not the case. Fitzgibbons is a player that looks almost guaranteed to continue trending upward throughout these upcoming two seasons at Mount Airy.
