Tuesday night, two of Charlotte’s top teams faced off. Charlotte Latin (19-2) hosted Providence Day (18-5). This game had conference bragging rights on the line as both teams had only lost one game in conference play. After losing their conference opener to Cannon School, Providence Day came into the game on a five game win streak, and Charlotte Latin also had just one loss to Providence Day just a few weeks earlier.

The first quarter started off with both teams trading baskets as neither team could quite gain control. Charlotte Latin’s Jaylen Jones scored 9 of their first 12 points. He set the tone on the defensive end, turning defense to offense. At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied up at 12-12.

In the second and third quarter, Providence Day was able to gain control of the ball game behind the balanced attack of Riley Allenspach, Donovan Atwell, Trey Horton and Quave Propst-Allison. The Chargers were able to extend their lead to 30-21 at the half and were able to build upon that lead in the third quarter with a score of 44-31.

Charlotte Latin wasn’t out of the game just yet. They picked up the intensity on the defensive end behind the play of Jaylen Jones and Brandon Lavitt. On the offensive end, they executed their sets. Ned Hull knocked down some perimeter shots and get into the midrange as well.

In the end, Providence Day held onto win 60-52 as they improved to 19-5 overall and 6-1 in conference. Charlotte Latin is now 19-3 overall with a 5-2 conference record.

6’10 2023 Riley Allenspach (Providence Day)
Allenspach had a monster game and was the difference maker. He finished with a game-high 19 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals. He played an extremely efficient game, going 8-9 from the field and 1-2 from behind the arc. He dominated the post going 7-7 from the paint. He worked hard to get deep post catches and punished the opponents when he got the ball, going up and finishing strong. In addition, he showcased the ability to go over either shoulder in the post, knocking down both the right-handed and left-handed hook shots. Allenspach also stepped out and knocked down the catch and shoot three-point shot. He is a strong, skilled post player who has the ability to stretch the court. More importantly, he was a beast on the glass, especially in the second half, grabbing 8 of his 9 rebounds. He currently holds offers from Army, Yale, Mercer, Furman, ECU, Appalachian State and George Mason. His recruitment is sure to pick up even more soon.

5’11 2022 Jaylen Jones (Charlotte Latin)
The unsigned senior, Jaylen Jones, set the tone the entire game for Charlotte Latin. In watching him play, he has to be one of the best on-ball defenders in the state. He pressures opposing ball-handlers, creates steals and even more turnovers. He turns defense to offense. In the half court, he runs the show, getting Latin into their sets, and when the opportunities present themselves, he has the ability to get by his defender and attack the basket. In addition, he also knocked down two three-pointers off the catch showing the ability to be a threat from the perimeter. Jones finished with a game-high 19 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, and 5 steals.

6’5 2022 Donovan Atwell (Providence Day)
The UNCG commit once again showed why he is arguably the best shooter in North Carolina. The lefty has one of the smoothest releases and every shot that he shoots looks like it’s going in. Atwell stepped up in the second half, scoring 10 of his 16 points, knocking down three three-pointers for the game.

6’2 2022 Ned Hull (Charlotte Latin)
Ned Hull continues to have a great junior season for the Hawks. He finished with 13 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal. We’ve always known Hull to be a knock down shooter. He hit three three-pointers in the game. But more importantly, Hull showcased what he has added to his game. He showed the ability to create off the bounce and get his own shot off. In the third quarter, he drilled a hesitation side-step three. Later, he created off the bounce, getting into the paint and finishing with the floater over length. Hull is a tough, competitive player who is deserving of college interest.

6’4 2023 Trey Horton (Providence Day)
Horton provides a strong, physical presence to Providence Day on the perimeter. Horton has the ability to shoot the ball at a high level off the catch from behind the arc. But more importantly, he defends and rebounds really well at the guard position. With his size, he is able to guard multiple positions. He’s even strong enough to battle inside if he gets caught on a switch. Horton finished with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 1 steal.

6’6 2023 Sean Rose (Charlotte Latin)
Sean Rose provided valuable length, athleticism, and versatility to this Charlotte Latin roster. He has the ability to impact the game in a variety of ways. On the offensive end, the lefty can stretch the floor with his perimeter shooting, he crashes the glass hard for put-backs, and he can face up and drive it from the high post. Defensively, he uses his length to contest shots and rebound the basketball. Rose finished with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists.

6’1 2022 Quave Propst-Allison (Providence Day)
The senior point guard runs the show for this Providence Day squad and it starts on the defensive end. He moves his feet well and disrupts opponents and their ability to initiate their offense. On the offensive end, he uses his speed and quickness to get in the paint and make plays for his teammates. He finishes with 9 points, 3 rebounds and a game-high 5 assists.
