There are so many incredible freshmen out there in college basketball this year. Some “lights” may be brighter on some more than others but one freshman has proven the be a vital piece to a national contender.
Freshman big Armando Bacot at North Carolina came in as one of the best big men in the country in high school but still at times, was overshadowed by others. Now earning a starting spot at North Carolina, he continues to raise his game and showing that he will be rising up other boards as well if he continues his play to start the season.
To say it simply, Bacot has been incredibly productive early on for the Tar Heels. And for a team that loves to feature their bigs, it does take time to adjust for some but for Bacot, he has shown to adjust quickly and is flourishing in his role for the Tar Heels.
Averaging an early 10.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, Bacot’s production is going to be a huge part to North Carolina’s success this season. And he is showing that he can reach another level… just take a look at his last 3 games:
Vs. Gardner Webb: 12 points, 11 rebounds
Vs. Elon: 22 points, 14 rebounds
Vs. Alabama: 12 points, 15 rebounds
Bacot’s ability to use his length, quickness/ running the floor, and a great touch around the rim has been impressive but he also has been incredibly dominant on the boards and as a shot-blocker as well. Coming into the season, there were questions on how UNC would be able to continue their trend with playing two big men but that question seems to be answered.
The freshman has always had the talent but at times throughout his recruitment (especially early on), he has been overlooked. But time after time, Bacot put in the hard work and produced at the high school level and he is doing that once again at the college level.
If he continues to produce and be a double-double machine like he has early on in Chapel Hill, he will only rise up the draft boards as well.
