This past weekend, we had the opportunity to watch Dub Salem for the first time in the early travel ball season. Although we wrote extensively about the program and its pieces, it feels like we need to reiterate that the year-round teammate duo of Nayte Spargo and Andin Ashford should both appeal to college coaches as scholarship-level pieces. Between their time at Winston-Salem Christian and now with Dub Salem, they’ve more than proven themselves worthy of roster spots. Let’s take a closer look at each…
It should be public information that the 6-foot-9 Spargo is an excellent floor-spacing big man with touch and instincts as an interior defender. Prior to last weekend, we wrote, “He’s a long, wiry post prospect who can operate around the basket or along the perimeter. Spargo is an excellent shooter, especially for his size, from midrange and beyond the arc. He possesses great mechanics and quality range. Spargo doesn’t shy away from open looks but can also attack a closeout and finish inside. He provides energy as a rebounder, alters shots defensively, and runs the floor hard in transition. Coach Holcomb-Faye on Spargo: “Nayte is a great pick-and-pop shooting big man. Displays range and the ability to knock down shots off the catch or attack off the dribble.”
In a different vein, Ashford is a smooth, well-rounded guard who can create for himself and others while applying scoring pressure in a variety of different ways. He’s a polished three-level scorer who can get hot and fill it up from all areas. Ashford breaks down opponents with his blend of explosiveness and craftiness, and knows how to take what the opposition is giving him. He’s a reliable transition threat who gets downhill and finishes with ease. Ashford knocks down jumpers at a quality percentage, both off the catch and bounce, and sets up others at a nice rate. Add in his defensive presence, and it’s easy to see why college coaches should be enticed.
