The ability to multi task is something Justin Matthews knows all too well, throughout July he balanced a busy live period with NC Top Flight and competitive 7on7 football competitions with Eastern Guilford high school.
Matthews had a solid showing with Top Flight through a very competitive slate of games during the live period. Matthews was a consistent presence at point guard he ran the offense and made life easy for the scorers around him. Matthews is an athlete with flare to his game, he's tough off the bounce, Matthews attacks the cup hard and embraces contact, he's an improved shooter too Matthews isn't hesitate to pull the trigger.
Eastern Guilford have been on the cusp of state titles in both football and basketball, after several heartbreaks this could be the year the Wildcats get one. Matthews and this senior class have won many games together, expectations are big and Matthews is as confident as ever on both ends.
' Everytime I'm on the court I want to prove I can compete, I distribute the ball really well and when I've shot the ball I've shot it well.' Matthews told Phenom Hoops.
Matthews will be counted on for stability and leadership on a young team, there is a lot of production to replace, but the Wildcats do have a mix of returning talent and transfers to build on. Rising sophomore guard 2021 Kadyn Dawkins was specifically mentioned and for good reason, the kid is an absolute sniper with big time range. The Wildcats will be guard heavy this season but that isn't anything new to Coach Spinks group.
On the football field Mathews and the Wildcats have a much more seasoned roster, these guys have been battle tested countless times. This season Mathews feels this group has the talent to go all the way.
” 7 on 7's have gone well we're trying to get a ring this year In football, we have one of the best skills teams in Guilford county. One of our toughest games will probably be against Page, and our first game is Aug, 17th, against Northeast Guilford that will be a pretty good game.” Matthews said.'
'In basketball we're young but we are going to compete, a lot of people are doubting us right now but we've got some guys coming. Kadyn (Dawkins)– can really shoot lights out man, we have OJ coming back he's a great defender, and some other new guys that will really bring energy.”
