Great action this weekend out in Greensboro for the annual David Rose Memorial Day event! This tournament always brings out good teams for a good cause (portion of funds goes to the Wounded Warrior Project). The following are some of the players from the event that you need to know!

Colton Reed, 6'1 2017 G at Heritage HS – Kids like this are the type I can't help but be drawn to as a scout. Not the biggest, not the fastest, not the flashiest kid on the floor but is 100% hustle and heart as a player. He has a high skill level and has been well coached and does everything you can ask of a player out on the floor. He can carry a team for stretches when he is hot and when he's not can still be impactful without having to be fed. Kid lays like a senior and has the type of game that can fit in any system in any time frame. Not as high a ceiling on this kid as some athletically but smart players like him always find a way to produce.

Jake Van Der Heijden, 6'6 2019 F at Ravenscroft – Long skinny young forward that shows signs of being a player. His length is what catches your eyes right off but then you see him pull up off the wing with a pretty jumper and you really get intrigued. He is still young and thin and will need to fill out as he grows but Ravenscroft has had success with kids like this in the past so gut tells me they will know how to bring this kid along as well. Need to see him get tougher and be more of a factor on the glass but hopefully that will come as he adds strength and fills out. Still, not sure I am seeing a dog in him or not. Still, a 6'6 skilled big is never a bad thing to have. The floor on this kid is high.

David Madzivanyika, 6'2 2019 F at Hillside HS – Built ike a football player and plays like one on the hardwoods as well. While football is his first love the kid shows promise with the round ball as well. He has quick feet, moves well, and has the big body on him that makes it harder for teams to move him out of wherever he sets up shop at on the floor. The range on the jumper is not there and neither are the handles but the power game is. He works the paint hard and grabs anything close off the glass. He may be a good prospect at defensive end but he has enough hoops game to help Hillside the next few seasons easy.

Desmon Wood, 6'1 2019 W at Riverside HS – Kid is one of those types that you can't really classify by position so we will just call him a baller for now. Very active young player is a legit threat to go pull a double/double every time out. His effort leads to production. It is ugly as all get out and you wonder if he knows what he is doing at times but the results you get out of his game are solid across the board. Where he lines u though will be the issue going forward. He is not a shooter, not a ball handler, not really a 3 and at 6'1 not really a forward either. But then he goes out and pulls 11 rebounds and puts in 15 points and you ask yourself why would anyone take him off the floor. Raw but interesting prospect to watch.

Marque Dewberry, 6'2 2019 G at Durham School of the Arts – His game is similar to Wood's but just not as ugly. He is a solid athlete and when he is in space running and attacking will make plays for you in and around the paint. He is also a good enough rebounder from his wing spot to think that 4-5 rebounds a game from him should not be out of the norm going forward. The thing I saw here though is that his handles are still rough and the shot from outside needs a lot of work. He is in a spot over at DSA that should allow him to develop and learn how to be the man as they usually need all the help they can get. Not sure where his future takes him but we will keep an eye on him to find out.

Lots more to get to from this event so be sure to check in on the regular. Until next time, see you in the gym!
