#DavidRoseMDC Reviews Part 4 – Jason Porter of AllStar Peps

Great action this weekend out in Greensboro for the annual David Rose Memorial Day event! This tournament always brings out good teams for a good cause (portion of funds goes to the Wounded Warrior Project). The following are some of the players from the event that you need to know!

Donte Tatum, 6'1 2017 G at Cary HS – This kid is like the Energizer Bunny, he just keeps going and going out on the floor. He has been a force for Cary HS for some time now and is just starting to get the looks his game deserves. Already sitting on a few D1 offers Donte has not slowed down any. His outside shot, once a weakness, has come a long ways and is now a viable option in his arsenal on offense. I'd still like to see him zero it in a bit more but the way he can go off the bounce all he has to be outside is decent at best. He competes in all phases of the game and has an explosive component to his game. One knock is that you can see him working hard where as others can make the game look easy. He is not yet at that point for me but even so, he is still one heck of a baller as is.

Darrion Burnette, 6' 2017 PG at Cary HS – Under rated leader out on the floor. While others at both his HS and on his AAU team get more print Darrion has gone out night after night, game after game and put up solid performances. He makes good decisions with the ball. He gets others engaged on the offensive end. He can defend. And when needed he can step up and be a scorer as well. He is not flashy nor is he the type that will stand out in the box scores often. But what he is though is a tough, humble, team first kind of leader that makes his teams better. I have really enjoyed watching him grow,

Douglas Elks, 6'5 2017 W at Ravenscroft – A lot of folks hear the term 'glue guy' and think it is a slap in the face. To me the term is one of the best compliments I can give a kid though. That's what Douglas is, a glue guy. He can do whatever is needed of him out on the floor and does it in a way that is unassuming yet eye catching at the same time. I have seen him bring the ball up the floor as a PG and initiate the offense. I have seen him sit out on the wing and kill folks with his shooting touch. I have seen him fight for position inside and take on the other teams power players. He does whatever his team needs of him and does it at a level where you can be comfortable with him at any spot on the floor just about. The knocks here is that at times he is not aggressive enough on the offensive end and athletically, while he gives good effort, he is not one of those quick twitch athletes everyone is looking for. He is a very bright, highly likeable, team first player that coaches would like to have to date their daughters. Great kid!

Conner Crabtree, 6'4 2017 G at Orange HS – This kid is smooth with it out on the floor. When I first saw him play he was more just a shooter than anything but in the last 2 years you can really see the growth in his game. He is more comfortable putting the ball on the floor now and can finish with a bang at the rim. He is a good passer off the wing as well making him even more dangerous as you have to be careful in how you D him up. Too close and he goes by you. Lay off and he can bomb away on you. Bring help and he finds the open man. It's a pick your poison type deal with him. If I am looking for knocks here it is that at times you want to see more out of him especially on the glass and on defense. It's not that he is bad in these areas, far from it in fact, but given his abilities you expect more is al. Several D1's are already all over this kid and for good reason. Kid can ball y'all.

Logan Vosburg, 6'6 2017 F at Orange HS – I love 'hard hat type players and that is exactly what Logan is. No one would look at his game and say it is pretty but then again most do not see what I see. I see beautiful effort, hustle, and heart when I look at him play. He gives you 100% of whatever he has in the tank to give every time out. Hs game is not just effort though. He has grown his game since I first saw him before his freshman year. He now has a face up jumper he can go to with range out to the 3 point line. He is quicker and stronger and is seeing the game better now. Time helped a lot of that but time did not put the work in to get better, that was all Logan. He may never be the speed boat others are in the 2017 class but he is one of the better battleships.

Patrick Dorsey, 6'5 2017 W at Millbrook HS – I love shooters and Patrick is a shooter of the highest order. Kid has range for days and the lack of a conscious that al shooters need to be successful. His game is a gritty one that he adds a lot of effort and hustle to. He has ideal size as a 2 and looks to be a good fit there at the next level as well. He needs to add strength and work on his quickness/handles some and with all shooters his shot selection could use some tightening up but those are all fixable issues. Expect him to get more interest in July and then again as the season starts of HS. Shooters like him are always in demand at one level or the other. Someone will scoop him up.

Until next time, see you in the gym!
