On Saturday, Phenom Hoops will travel to Carmel Christian in Matthews, North Carolina to host our sixth annual Phenom Hoops MLK Showcase. The one-day event will begin at noon and the final game will start at 7:30, featuring six games of exciting action between twelve highly talented programs—both from public and private ranks. In preparation for the event, we will take a closer look at each matchup and highlight individual players to monitor…

The fourth contest of our MLK Showcase takes place between Cox Mill (6-6) and East Mecklenburg (8-6). While this battle will be of the utmost importance for both squads, Cox Mill will enter this contest on somewhat of a lull after facing Lake Norman and Hickory Ridge this week. Though very talented, the Chargers are quite young. Outside of seniors James Carswell, Chris Kirkland, and Jared Igbibe, most of the production comes from underclassmen. Young guys like Teeshon Smith, Cruz Miller, and Sherod McCormick account for over 50 PPG. On the other side, the Eagles are clearly led by Ahmari Hicks and Jordan Buzzard. Not only does the duo generate nearly 60% of the scoring for this group, but they also set the tone defensively and on the glass. However, James McIver, Nixon Wright, and Vance Johnson also provide valuable contributions. Both teams have a lot of names that spectators and college coaches will want to see, so it’ll be interesting to see who emerges in this showing.
