Each and every time Phenom Hoop Report gets to report or sees a commitment from a player we have seen over the years, it is always a fantastic day. It is great to see players achieve their goal to play at the next level and it is such a great accomplishment for that player.

Here is the latest commitment.

Player: Jaylon Gibson
Class: 2020
Committed to: Wake Forest

Coaches Perspective:

Phenom Hoops spoke with Coach DeShannon Morris from GRACE Christian School to tell us more about what Gibson brings to the table.

Q: What have you seen Jaylon bring to the court and what may he bring at the next level with Wake Forest'

Coach: Jaylon Gibson is as humble and hard-working as I have seen. He has a huge upside and a work ethic to get better. Jaylon will rebound the ball out of space at its highest peak and help start the break. He runs like a gazelle at 6″11 and has a soft touch from the outside. He will be a great pick and pop guy that will pose matchup problems for other teams. Jaylon changes shots as well as block them and I believe Wake is getting better defensively with Jaylon helping to control the paint. In my humble opinion, he will develop into an All-ACC player under Coach Manning and their staff! They are great at developing young man like Jaylon at the on and off the court.

Q: What improvements have you seen him make as a player'

Coach: Jaylon has improved his defensive presence in a major way. He is able to guard his own yard in the post and on the perimeter. On offense, we have seen Jaylon extend his game to where now he is a threat at all three scoring levels. He has increased his handle and court awareness as well. The last thing I have seen grow is his leadership skills! Jaylon is a model student, teammate, and player. He understands he has a long way to go to come to Wake as an impact freshman, but the thing that is different about him than most players is he genuinely wants to get better and has the deep work ethic to do it! We are grateful and blessed to coach him and see his development first hand!!

What Was Said by Phenom Hoops:

“He’s a very long, wiry post prospect with an unbelievable amount of skill and poise. Gibson is already a high-level rebounder and rim-protector, but many folks fail to recognize his unique offensive abilities. He possesses great touch with either hand around the basket and can certainly play above the rim, but his ball-handling, vision, and overall level of craftiness (especially in transition) seem to get overlooked. Gibson operates within the team concept and looks to make the right play whenever possible. Next in his development process is simply continuing to add strength, as he possesses the necessary skill set to be an extremely high-level player at the next level.” – NC Top 80 in 2019

“Simply put, 6’11 Jaylon Gibson is oozing with upside and potential. He’s an athletic and agile hybrid forward. Gibson has the ability to score from all three levels including being an effective 3-point shooter. Already sporting excellent ball-handling skills, Gibson has terrific court vision and is such an unselfish player.” – Rick Lewis in 2019/ Game Recap

“Extremely long big man with strong inside-out scoring ability; he can rise above nearly any opponent and frequently gets blocks/steals by way of his long arms. Gibson has tremendous upside that he could reach sooner than later.” – Phenom Hoops in 2018
