Over the weekend, Queens University learned that they had landed some great future talent.

Not only did they land James Madison transfer Michael Fowler but on Sunday, 6’4 2020 Kalib Mathews called up the coaching staff to let them know that he would be committing as well.

On Sunday, Mathews announced his decision, saying:

“First off, I would like to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity. I also would like to thank Coach Stanley and Coach Marshall for always believing in me and giving me the chance to play with their programs. I would like to thank my friends and family that supported me throughout this process. Last but not least, I would like to thank my mom and grandparents for making me the person I am today and helping me on my journey… With that being said, I am excited to announce I have committed to Queens University.”

Mathews has been a regular this summer with Phenom Hoops and has always caught the eyes of our scouts.

“It is his smooth nature, his effortless attempt to drop 25 with explosion, stuff off the bounce and as one of the top catch and shoot guys in the state. Matthews is able to act as a secondary initiator and he is able to get downhill from the wing and finish on your head, over the trees. Matthews scoring package is extremely translatable, so much so that whichever D1 school gets him could have a 1st team guy by the time he graduates.” – Jamie Shaw

“Through this entire season, arguably no prospect has been more consistent than Kalib Matthews, and that only continued at Summer Havoc. He’s a long, smart, smooth, explosive wing prospect with an absolute flamethrower from beyond the arc. Matthews is a leader and competitor that simply knows how to play his game and maximize his abilities on both ends of the floor.” – Jeff Bendel

What Mathews Said:

– What all went into your decision and what Queens the place for you?

“The coaches really loved me and while I was there, they made me feel like family. Coach told me he was going to make me a pro.”

– How did you inform the staff?

“I called Coach Lundy and Coach Steele on a three-way call with Coach Stan and Coach Marshall and I told them that after the visit, I was ready to commit and I couldn’t wait to be a Royal.”

– What are they hoping you can provide the team?

“Just to come in and provide good minutes whenever it is needed.”

– Always like to ask how a player would describe their game on the floor?

“On the floor, I feel like I can score from all levels whether it is a jump shot or layup and I always share the ball with my teammates. I’m just a great team player and look for my teammates first.”
