Each and every time Phenom Hoop Report gets to report or sees a commitment from a player we have seen over the years, it is always a fantastic day.  It is great to see players achieve their goal to play at the next level and it is such a great accomplishment for that player.

Here is the latest commitment.

Player: Dontrez Styles
Class: 2021
Committed to: North Carolina

What the Player Said:

The Kinston tradition continues as 2021 Dontrez Styles becomes the latest player to stay in-state and will be putting on the UNC uniform.  Styles is a physically imposing prospect, one that plays with a great feel and uses his strength and size to his advantage.  He is a tweener forward that is able to defend multiple positions, put it on the floor, and score on multiple levels.  His recruitment continued to rise and his latest offer from North Carolina seemed to be the one. He had this to say to Phenom Hoops after receiving the offer.

“The North Carolina offer was big for me.  Coach Williams called me that morning we talked for like 15 minutes, then he called back that night to talk to me and my family.  That is when he offered and it felt great.  UNC is a great school.”

This past season for the Vikings, Styles averaged nearly 20 points and 11 rebounds, helping his team to a 26-4 overall record.

What Was Said by Phenom Hoops:

“What’s not to like about an athletic and explosive wing that combines strength and finesse. Dontrez is at his best getting out in transition and finishing with crowd-pleasing dunks, but also has excellent body control finishing strong above the rim, not to mention a strong midrange game.”

“In terms of physical gifts, arguably no player is more impressive than Styles, who is big, strong, explosive, and starting to become a high-level offensive player. That being said, Styles is already a smart, versatile defender that plays with a game-changing motor. He can initiate the offense, but typically works from the wing and attacks the rim at every possible opportunity while knocking down open shots. Styles, while already quite productive, might truly have the highest upside of anyone in this group.”

“Styles came into the event as the #1 rated junior prospect in North Carolina’s 2021 class. He is a consensus Top 75 ranked player nationally, and he showcased why he may be underrated at that level. Styles is very strong, has great size and plays with a great explosion. His jump shot has improved since the summer and so has his handle, and on the explosion side of things, he has gotten bouncier since the summer too. Styles is on a direct trajectory going only up. He has proven to be a Top 50 type guy, in his class, at this point with the real ability to possibly grow for more.” – Good Guys vs. Cancer in 2019
