Each and every time Phenom Hoop Report gets to report or sees a commitment from a player we have seen over the years, it is always a fantastic day.  It is great to see players achieve their goal to play at the next level and it is such a great accomplishment for that player.

Here is the latest commitment.

Player: Elijah Thomas
Class: 2022
Committed to: Wingate

What the Player Said:

Phenom: What made Wingate the place for you in the end? What were some of the factors that went into your decision?
Thomas: I really loved how Wingate felt as soon as I stepped on campus and with them, it’s bigger than basketball and I really loved that.  Factors that went into it was my family, they really loved it and I wanted to be somewhere they were just as comfortable as me.  I also felt a connection at the school when I was visiting.

Phenom: From when the staff offered to now, what has your relationship been like and who has been your main recruiter?
Thomas: My main recruiter was Coach Sause, he’s been recruiting me since he was at Averett.  We built a great relationship over time.

Phenom: What do they think you can bring to the program?
Thomas: I think I can bring great energy, a motor, a competitive spirit, and my heart to win and be better each and every day.

Phenom: For those future Wingate fans of yours, how would you best describe your game and what you can provide on the court?
Thomas: My game is very eye-catching and at times, you can be like “how did he even pull that off.”  My energy is very electric, it is like it goes through everyone. I provide that dawg mentality, all the hustle plays, racking up charges, and doing all the dirty work.

What Was Said by Phenom Hoops:

“Although it might sound like a broken record at this point, Thomas genuinely epitomizes toughness and being a quality teammate/leader for this group. He’s a strong athlete and finisher, but can also knock down perimeter jumpers effectively off the catch. Thomas sets the tone defensively and on the glass, consistently playing bigger than his size and outworking opponents for extra opportunities on a regular basis.”

“You just have to love what Thomas brings to the floor. This young man leaves it all out there, puts his body on the line, makes so many hustle plays, and brings tremendous energy that just lifts the team up.  But he continues to show his offensive skillset, getting to his spots, putting the ball on the deck to create shots, or using his athleticism to get to the rim.”

“Between him and his teammate Lureon Walker, there have been very few combo guards that have shown the same level of consistency in the last calendar year. The combo guard initially caught my attention with his length and ability to finish at the rim. Today he’s scoring from all 3 levels, and displaying the athleticism that’s earned him a few highlight-worthy plays. Curious to see which program lands him.”
