Each and every time Phenom Hoop Report gets to report or sees a commitment from a player we have seen over the years, it is always a fantastic day.  It is great to see players achieve their goal to play at the next level and it is such a great accomplishment for that player.

Here is the latest commitment.

Player: AJ Smith
Class: 2022
Committed to: The Citadel

What Was Said by Phenom Hoops:

“While he’s probably more of a guard, AJ Smith’s versatility allows him to be labeled as a wing whenever necessary. He’s strong, physical, and well-rounded with the ability to thrive as a role player or expand his production as needed. Smith is an exceptional defender with the blend of size, athleticism, and overall instincts to comfortably contain three positions at the high school level. He’s smart and understands how to make quality reads with the ball in his hands, but can also consistently find opportunities as an off-ball piece. Smith is a great rebounder for his position, and does a nice job of pushing the break in transition. His calm, steady demeanor and approach make him among the most low-maintenance prospects in the state. Smith will carve out a useful role wherever he ends up.”

“After seeing guys like Jayden Epps and Patrick Wessler commit, one has to wonder why Smith is still available. Though he possesses somewhat of a quiet demeanor, he’s as valuable to this Combine Academy squad as anyone on the roster. Similar to one of the aforementioned guys above, it seems like college coaches want Smith to someone he’s not. Rather than trying to conform every single player to fit into a certain mold, perhaps just allow Smith to excel at embracing his own identity. He’s a big, strong, physically overwhelming wing prospect with the IQ, instincts, and general toughness to reliably contain three positions at the next level. Smith is a quality athlete, terrific rebounder, and adaptable offensive player who doesn’t require the ball in order to make an impact. His natural low-maintenance identity should be way more coveted.”

“Smith just battles each time he is on the floor. Tonight, he continued to do the same, doing what he does best in getting downhill, finishing well around the basket, and battling through contact.  He also showed his ability to knock down the mid-range shot and help on the boards.”

“Although Combine is as balanced as any team within the state, Smith arguably stood out as their most impressive contributor. He’s maintained his identity as a tough, rugged, high-motor guard with defensive prowess and downhill ability. Smith touches the paint at a consistent rate, where he’s able to reliably finish, pull-up, or set up others. He’s a smart, fundamental, straightforward piece, and should be a nice player wherever he ultimately decides to further his playing career.”
