Each and every time Phenom Hoop Report gets to report or sees a commitment from a player we have seen over the years, it is always a fantastic day.  It is great to see players achieve their goal to play at the next level and it is such a great accomplishment for that player.

Here is the latest commitment.

Player: Anjay Cortez
Class: 2020
Committed to: Alabama A&M

What the Player Said:

PHR: What made Alabama A&M the place for you in the end'

Cortez: The reason I picked Alabama A&M is that they believed in me and my abilities. I feel like I fit well with their system and what they are trying to do with the program. I felt that it was a great place for me to thrive and work hard and become a better player and a better man.

PHR: What are they hoping you can provide to the program with your skillset'

Cortez: The coaches said they are hoping for me to have a similar game to what I had in high school but build off of it when I get to college. They said my toughness, my defense by being able to guard all five positions, and my athleticism will help a lot. They said they want me to perfect my long-range jump shot and ability to create off the dribble.

PHR: What will be your focus this offseason'

Cortez: This offseason, my focus is to put on some weight and build muscle.  I also am working on my ball-handling and three-point shot a lot too.

Stats Last Season:

Playing at United Faith Christian Academy, Cortez played in 25 games and averaged 7.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game.

What Was Said by Phenom Hoops:

'He's a long, wiry forward prospect that can operate in a variety of different roles and find success. Cortez is a quality slasher and cutter without the ball (which is his most effective scoring method), but can also knock down the occasional perimeter jumper. He has an excellent frame and utilizes his length nicely when rebounding or defending the point of attack. Cortez has a solid feel, athleticism, and makes a lot of plays in transition.' – NC Top 80 evaluation

'He's a known athlete with great length and athleticism but his versatility and overall defensive instincts were undeniably impressive throughout this contest. Cortez altered an abundance of shots around the basket and forced opponents to think twice before entering the paint.' – Game Report in 2020 from Jeff Bendel

'He has tremendous length, athleticism and can impact the game with his ability to protect the rim, rebound, and defend. Mobility and versatility are his strongest attributes. In speaking with coach Coley and Roberts, they both stated, 'Cortez is freakishly athletic and can guard all five positions, even the opposing team's point guard. He can score effectively from the midrange.' – Rick Lewis from 2019
