Each and every year, there are players that start making their own mark on the court and are new names for college coaches to start looking at more. To start the travel ball season, 2023 Will Gray from East Forsyth/ NC Spartans Haidinger. Gray is a familiar name around the state for what he has done and shown so far with his game, but it still seems like he is flying a bit under the radar, especially with what he can provide on both sides of the floor.
Early on this spring/summer, Gray is really opening more eyes with his game. Our very own, Jeffrey Bendel, was one of the first to recognize Gray’s potential and impact, writing this article over a year ago. (William Gray Getting Noticed on a Bigger Stage). In that article, he had this to say:
“He’s very smart, tough as nails, and offers nonstop energy, which makes him somewhat of a nightmare for opponents on both ends of the floor. Gray is an excellent all-around athlete with the necessary quickness and sharp anticipation to harass opposing ball-handlers into an abundance of miscues and turnovers. He’s a strong penetrator with quality vision, finishing ability, and the ability to draw a ton of fouls and convert at the free-throw line.”
Recently at the Phenom Grassroots TOC, he gave us a glimpse of his entire game, being a dominant prospect offensively and defensively. Offensively, he was able to get downhill, create well for himself, and finish through contact while also excelling in transition. He is quicker than some may expect but also crafty in creating. Add that to his ability to knock down shots, being an unselfish teammate, and showcasing his athleticism, Gray checks off a lot of boxes offensively. Then, when you add his defensive presence, getting into defenders and being physical, as well as his impact on the boards, Gray is one that more schools could use at the next level. With what he has shown and his development, expect more schools to get involved with this young man.
