Coach Rick’s “Getting to Know”
6’5 2022 Dawson McAlhany (Bishop McGuiness)

At our Phenom Open Gym Tour back in September, 2019, we wrote the following about Dawson McAlhany. “I think at this point it’s pretty clear that McAlhany should be viewed as a bonafide division one level prospect. His versatility at 6’5 with point guard like ball skills, vertical explosiveness, craftiness around the hoop, and a really improved perimeter jumper make McAlhany the best prospect on this Bishop roster. He played an integral role in their playoff run and had 9 huge points off the bench in the state title game. That experience will translate to an increased confidence level for McAlhany. He starting to realize how good he is and is further understanding how to apply his talents, making him achieve that blend of current productivity and long term potential. He has a chance to be the best player on the team this year, he’s a walking triple double threat, yes he’s that good. Expect Dawson to catch more attention for what he does on a game to game basis from college coaches, media, and hoop heads across North Carolina. He really has a chance to become a special player.
This past season, McAlhany enjoyed a banner sophomore season. He averaged 16.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG and collected 12 “double doubles” for the season, pretty remarkable numbers. In addition, McAlhany has been named and selected to the All Conference and All Area team twice, another terrific accomplishment in his first two years of high school basketball. In addition, we got ample opportunities to watch him with his NC Spartans 16U this past summer and was equally impressed with “jack of all trades” ability. He has good size, athleticism and natural scoring abilities, but more importantly showcased a tough blue-collar gritty approach to the game. Coach Thompson stated, “McAlhany was our Sixth Man last season in our NCHSAA 1A Title run. (Scored nine points in championship game) This season as a sophomore, he took on a much larger role and led us in scoring and rebounding. He has a very high ceiling ad a player and has the unique old school quality of being a gym rat- Dawson LOVES the game and wants to be coached! I believe he has a bright future!”
