Although it should be common knowledge by now, circumstances ultimately decide and dictate everything regarding the game of basketball. Two years ago, Rasheed Wallace surprised everyone upon making the announcement with his intent to return to the high school season as the coach of Jordan High School in Durham, North Carolina. The move truly sent shockwaves across the state. The four-time NBA All-Star become the most noteworthy hiring since (former NBA veteran) Jeff McInnis, and would ultimately go on to have a drastic effect on our current landscape. His name and energy attracted an abundance of quality prospects for the newly assembled Sheed Wallace Select. Quickly thereafter, Patrick Cole took over coaching duties and quietly became one of the most influential guys in North Carolina. Let’s find out why.

In order to understand the scope of this situation, we should make a mention of his long list of accomplishments. Sure, Wallace’s NBA career is super-appealing to young players—but Cole is decorated in his own regard. Following his high school career in New Jersey, Cole committed to Coppin State and set his sights on the collegiate ranks. After making the MEAC All-Rookie Team, he transferred to Siena for a brief period before ultimately ending up at North Carolina Central. In his two seasons for the Eagles, Cole put up incredible numbers, found success in the win/loss column, and received countless honors (including MEAC Player of the Year) as their clear leader. He then parlayed his production and long list of college achievements into an international playing career. Both Cole and Wallace have reached phenomenal heights throughout their respective careers, so it’s unclear as to why Cole isn’t receiving more buzz surrounding his name with NCGBB Academy—especially given his coaching across the summer season.

To be honest, majority of these college prospects should be dreaming for similar success to someone like Cole. The probability of being a MEAC POY is still low but obviously more favorable than the likelihood of becoming Wallace. Additionally, Cole coached Sheed Wallace Select, so it’s perplexing as to why more guys aren’t buzzing about his position with NCGBB Academy (which was established prior to Wallace). Lest we forget the visible development from individual players over the last four months' It seems like people are overthinking the entirety of this situation. Is Wallace knowledgeable and worth excitement' Absolutely. But his high-profile status shouldn’t negate everything Cole has worked for, and largely achieved, throughout his basketball career. Founder Ty Cox added, ““Pat has been integrally involved in every aspect, from training to coaching our national team, since day one. The entire coaching staff and roster of players have remained intact, and seamlessly transitioned into their preparation for a great upcoming season.” His extensive knowledge and ideology as a coach should only lead to continued prosperity. Again, it’s time folks start recognizing Cole as one of the top, most promising up-and-comers in the industry.
