There have been many players that we, at Phenom Hoops, label as underrated or under the radar
early in their recruiting process. Some players, like Zion Williamson, are naturally going to
break through it, but others, like Jake van der Heijden, are forced to take a different route. It
seems like just yesterday that we were evaluating him at 2016 Phenom David Rose, but his
growth has been off the charts since then. At 6-foot-8, van der Heijden has possessed all the tools
to be a perfect stretch-four for a long time, but he's taken huge strides as an overall shot creator.
The Ravenscroft product sat down with Phenom Hoops to provide an update in all facets of his
game, recruitment, and goals going forward.

JB: How have you grown over the last year'
JVDH: Over the past school and travel season, I've really improved on my shot quickness
and consistency. I've been learning how to draw fouls at a higher rate. I'm getting much
more comfortable handling the ball, taking guys off the dribble, and defending multiple

JB: What are some goals have you set for yourself going forward'
JVDH: For the school year, I hope to sweep the conference again and beat the stronger
teams outside of our conference like Greensboro Day and Wesleyan. I'm going to be the
leader on the team and probably the leading scorer, but I am ready for those challenges. I
need to improve my court vision, handle on quicker guards and ability to handle the ball
against smaller guards.

JB: What are the latest schools to contact you'
JVDH: The latest schools to contact me are Arkansas, Brown, Liberty, Lipscomb,
Princeton, Wofford, and a few others.

Right now, van der Heijden holds offers from Lehigh, Presbyterian, and Western Carolina, but
he's in the process of solidifying himself as a surefire high-level Division I prospect. It seems
like van der Heijden has been slept on for far too long, since he's been doing this for years
against the same guys and receiving no love from college programs. That being said, his best
basketball lies ahead. Whichever organization secures van der Heijden should be ecstatic at the
high quality prospect and person they'll be acquiring. Expect van der Heijden to see an influx of
offers come his way over these next few months.
