Now that we’ve reached the month of August, travel ball has concluded and players are preparing for the upcoming high school season. While the majority of targets for college coaches are seniors, several juniors and multiple sophomores will inevitably put themselves on the radars of next-level programs. Over the next few months, we will closely examine various players who should warrant attention as next-level prospects. This article series intends to provide breakdowns of guys coaches should know about. We will continue by looking at Mason Dobie of First Flight High School.

Between his immediate impact as a freshman and continued growth over the next two seasons, it’s arguable that Dobie is one of the most productive three-year (entering his fourth) varsity players throughout North Carolina. He started his high school career by posting nightly averages of 17.9 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 2.4 APG, and 1.7 SPG with 45/38/73 splits. That alone is uncommon, but it was just the beginning for Dobie. Albeit slightly different, his sophomore numbers were largely similar to the prior season. Then, last season (following the departure of his older brother, Isaac), Dobie had a breakout year as the clear focal point of the Nighthawks. As a junior, he averaged 23.4 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 1.9 APG, and 1.0 SPG with insane efficiency across the board. Through three seasons, he’s amassed 1655 points, 390 rebounds, 224 assists, and 93 steals—which is simply incredible.

It’s quite obvious that Dobie should be a major target for several types of college programs. He’s smart, tough, and well-rounded with the ability to find success in various roles. Dobie’s gaudy scoring production is mainly out of necessity and the general betterment of the team. However, he’s more than proven himself as a playmaker. Dobie is a reliable shot-creator, both for himself and others, who knows when to defer versus assert himself. Although he’s comfortable at consistently creating off the bounce, he’s equally as effective in spot-up scenarios. Dobie is also a solid defender and rebounder who plays with quality effort on both ends of the floor. There have been plenty of notable guys to come through First Flight over the recent years, and Dobie seamlessly transitioned into a leadership role. Expect him to be a priority for coaches over the coming months.
