Last week hundreds of coaches showed up from across the country to watch players perform at Phenom Hoops’ April NCAA Certified Live event. Countless offers were given out, some to known commodities and many to players with no offers coming into the event.
This weekend, at Phenom’s Grassroots Tip Off Live, coaches need to line up and here are some of the breakout candidates to watch for.
6’4” 2019 Ahmad Jeffries
Team Cobras (NC)
Jeffries had one of the best seasons North Carolina high school basketball has seen. He averaged 32 points and made 142 threes on the season. Jeffries is a length shooting guard who has a pure stroke and the confidence, and ability, to score it in a big way. He will transfer up to Woodstock Academy next season, college should start to get on him now, the inevitable blow up will happen and you don’t want to be too late.
6’5” 2019 Brandon Murray
Team ENC (NC)
Every time he steps on the floor, Murray gets better. Always a shooter, Murray has a pure stroke with deep range. Over the last year, he has started to attack the basket better, getting downhill and finishing at the rim. He is a good athlete and has great length with broad shoulders, very projectable frame. Again, numerous offers should be coming down the pipeline for Murray, our advice is to get on him early.
6’8” 2020 Sam Hood
Durham Hurricanes 16s (NC)
Hood has all the tools you would want. He is a good athlete, with both lateral quickness as well as straight line explosion. Hood shoots it well from beyond the arc when his feet are set and is a lock down defender in space. Hood is a former quarterback, who out grew the position is just playing his first year of basketball only. The sky is the limit and college coaches are going to want to watch him now.
6’6” 2020 Chase Mebane
Mid State Magic 17s (NC)
Mebane walks on to the floor with a great frame, long and good strength. Once he starts playing you realize quickly that Mebane’s IQ may be his best attribute. He plays with a great pace and has exceptional court vision. Mebane is sure to blow up at any time, make sure you get in on the forefront of that.
6’1” 2019 George Jones
Boo Williams Carolina (NC)
Off the rip, the two words that describe Jones’ game is toughness and winner. He is an aggressive guard, on both ends of the floor, who likes the tough stuff. He led his Pamlico County High School to its first ever appearance in a state championship game this season. At every level all he has done is win, he has just done so in rural areas. Now it’s time for the coaches to watch and jump on board.
6’5” 2019 Asanti Price
Team Vision (NC)
Price has all the makings. His arms extend down to his knees when he is standing straight up. He is a good athlete and is a shot maker. A smooth pull up game with range extending well beyond the arc. As he continues to get stronger his game only expands, but the projectability of his frame is obvious, so is his ability to score and upside as a defender.
