Bendel's Best: Chick-Fil-A Classic Part Two

6'5 '18 Montez Mathis (John Carroll School)

If there is such a thing as holding high major college offers but still being under the radar, then it is especially evident in Montez Mathis. He shares the backcourt with highly touted point guard Immanuel Quickley and they make for a dangerous combination. Mathis is a do-it-all type of guard; he is a terrific scorer, secondary ball-handler, and defender. In terms of scoring, he gets it done on all three levels quite often and really punishes opposing teams with his ability to shoot the three-pointer at phenomenal rates. However, Mathis has a fairly crafty off-the-bounce game and has displayed the ability to create decent looks for himself and others. His frame is what stands out immediately, as he is strong and lengthy; he looks the part of a next-level shooting guard. Currently, he holds offers from USC (Southern California), West Virginia, St. John's, Memphis and NC State. The offers will continue to pile in for the junior that has shown the ability to play at a high level consistently.

6'4 '18 Will Richardson (Liberty County)

There is so much to like when it comes to the fluffy-haired point guard, as he has all the makings of a star at the next level. Richardson is quite aggressive for a player with such smooth tendencies. He was among the craftiest, high IQ players on display at the Chick-Fil-A Classic, able to create a quality shot (for himself or others) out of nothing. There is no proven method for containing Richardson, as he can score on three levels whenever he wants and does so with great efficiency. The three-point shot is one of his deadliest methods of scoring; his range is unlimited but the defense must stay disciplined or Richardson will burn them off the dribble and finish with finesse inside. He currently holds offers from VCU, Georgia Tech, Saint Louis, Auburn, UAB, Georgia, Iona, Georgia Southern, and Florida Gulf Coast. Richardson is already a coveted prospect, but his recruitment will continue to rise if he keeps playing at such a high level.

6'5 '18 Elijah Weaver (Oldsmar Christian)

During the Chick-Fil-A Classic our analyst Jamie Shaw reaffirmed that Elijah Weaver should be in the 'top point guard for his class' conversation and he hit the nail on the head. He is simply the full package at point guard, blessed with size, speed, quickness, vision, scoring polish and IQ. Seriously, Weaver is one of a kind and it makes sense why nearly every program in the country is working to get him. A prolific scorer on three levels, his ability to create shots is nearly unprecedented, and he is simply an elite all-around player. Though he is already considered a top-five position player in his class, it is impossible to bring up top junior point guards without mentioning Weaver. He holds offers from the likes of UCF, Louisville, Florida, USF, Nebraska, FIU, USC (Southern California), Villanova, Miami, FSU, Memphis, Virginia, Missouri, Wake Forest, UConn, Boston College, LSU, Iowa State, Georgia Tech, UL Lafayette, Tennessee, Clemson and Maryland. Fortunately, this isn't the last time we can see him, as he will be on display in Wilmington for the Phenom Joe Miller showcase, December 27-30.

6'5 '18 Trey Wertz (Providence Day School)

The ascension of Trey Wertz becoming more than 'just' a shooter has been tantalizing, more so now that he is regarded as an all-around lethal scorer. While he is often judged by his unorthodox release, people forget so quickly how good Wertz has been, especially this season. The improvement is easily visible and though he shares a backcourt with superstar point guard Devon Dotson, more times than not it is Wertz that keeps them in games. Streaky is not a word that accurately describes him, as he is quite consistent and can score from anywhere on the floor. Despite becoming a polished all-around scorer, Wertz's three-point shot is still his most valuable asset considering his range dials to the parking lot. Right now, Wertz holds offers from Richmond, Rice, La Salle, Clemson, Charlotte, Tulane, and Old Dominion. Those are quality programs, but Wertz will accumulate even more offers if he continues his extremely high level of play.
