The Carmel Tip-Off brought a ton of talent to Matthews (NC) this past weekend, and the Asheville School was one we were really eager to see to start the season. We were disappointed, as the duo of 2026 Heimir Helgason and 20225 Miki Gacic both finished with 26 points in an impressive win, and they clearly should have put their names on more radars for college programs. We dive more into their games, and why they should be getting more looks.
2026 Heimir Helgason:
Helgason is a player Phenom Hoops has been hoping to shed more light on, as we believe there is a lot of potential and upside with his game. Listed at 6’9, Helgason is comfortable in a variety of areas on the court, whether it is operating inside or being a presence outside. The forward shows a natural feel for the game, running the court well, finishing well at the rim, and showing nice touch in the paint as well as being a defensive presence. But what makes him unique is his size and comfort level in stepping outside, showing his ability to pick and pop, be a threat from behind the arc and mid-range, and his IQ on the court. Right now, he holds multiple offers but I believe he is one that could see an uptick and could be a sneaky get for several other programs.
2025 Miki Gacic:
Gacic is another under-the-radar talent that I believe should be garnering attention from D1 and D2 schools, as he is one that can certainly play at the next level. Gacic is a 6’3 strong and sturdy guard that brings strong value to his team. He plays under control and at his own pace, has continued to elevate his game offensively in not only using his body and frame to his advantage off the bounce, finishing with feel and touch around defenders, but also growing confident more from the perimeter as well. But what you have to like about his game is his overall feel and presence; he plays under control, makes good reads, doesn’t force much on the court, and creates well for others with an unselfish feel as well as creates for himself.
