Apex Friendship 71 Durham Academy 50

Playing for 5th place in the David West Bracket of the John Wall Holiday Invitational, we have Durham Academy 16-3 pitted against Apex Friendship 9-3. Durham Academy, playing without the services of MJ Rice, advanced to the 5th place game by upsetting defending NCISAA 1A state champion Greenfield. Durham Academy’s 6’0 junior Cole Sinclair erupted for 27 points in the win going 7-9 from the 3-point line. For Apex Friendship, they have been riding the back and shoulders of 6’7 NC State signee Nick Farrar, who has averaged 35 PPG in the two games. 

First Half 

Apex Friendship raced out to a 23-10 first quarter lead behind the hot shooting of 5’10 senior guard Jackson Spencer with 12 points. Spencer went 4-5 from the 3-point line and played a heady overall floor game. Playing flawlessly at times, Apex Friendship raced out to a commanding 40-24 halftime lead. They were moving extremely well in the half court, making the extra pass, as they had 12 assists compared to only five turnovers. Leading the way for Apex Friendship was 6’7 senior Nick Farrar with 14 while 5’10 senior Jackson Spencer chipped in 12 points. Apex Friendship also shot 14-30 from the floor for 46.7%, and 9-15 from the 3-point line for 60%. 

Second half

Durham Academy played Apex Friendship evenly in the second half, but the 16-point deficit was too much to overcome. For the most part, Durham Academy just couldn’t get untracked offensively for the game, especially from the 3-point line.  

Summary

If you look at the box score, the big story line was the shooting from the 3-point from each perspective team. Coming into today’s contest, 3-point shooting was a strong point for Durham Academy. Unfortunately, they picked a bad day to have a bad day. For the game Durham Academy went 4-22 from the 3-point line for a dismal 18%, whereas Apex Friendship went 10-20 for a terrific 50%. Nick Farrar led all scorers with a game high 28 points, giving him a three-game total of 98 points, which makes him the ninth all-time leading scorer in the John Wall Holiday Invitational. In addition, Jackson Spencer finished with 17 points, six assists and two steals for Apex Friendship. Durham Academy was led by Nik Graves with 13 points, six rebounds and six steals.
