This weekend, Phenom Hoops travels to Ambassador Christian in Huntersville, North Carolina to host our inaugural Ambassador Classic. The one-day event features six games with a healthy mix of programs from the public, private, and independent sectors. In preparation for the showcase, we will take a closer look at each matchup and overview some of the anticipated storylines…
Gaston Christian vs. Heritage
The third battle of the Ambassador Classic takes place at 3:00 between Gaston Christian and Queen’s Grant. In looking at Gaston Christian (14-4), the Eagles have quietly been one of the top teams throughout North Carolina. They have multiple skilled pieces, yet their defense has clearly led the way. This group has only notched the 70-point mark in 4 out of 18 games, which only speaks to their toughness and determination as a group. That being said, Cameron Newman is the obvious focal point. Not only does he lead the team in three of the five major statistical categories (points, assists, steals), but his scoring average is more than double that of the next-highest player. Additionally, guys like Dario Williams, Alessandro Luparia, and Rilpuou Mabor each stand out as potential difference-makers at the next level. Rounding out this group, Jaylon Tull, Dillon Joy, Corey Carpenter, Jeremy Duhon, and Kendall Southern each log meaningful minutes. Meanwhile, the Huskies of Heritage have a variety of enticing pieces. The productive senior duo of Jon Mwanda and Levi Beckwith set the tone in a variety of ways for this group. In addition to the college-level pairing, Ryder Strand and Cam Jones are useful pieces that can assert themselves in a variety of different ways. Strand is a blossoming prospect and Jones knows how to produce within the flow of the action. Expect this contest to be a battle.
