What is great about the Hoop State League, and really any fall league, during this time is that it gives us a chance to see teams in action and really get a glimpse of what each program is bringing to the table this upcoming season. Phenom Hoops was on deck for the Week 1 action in Raleigh and though there were a few teams that really captured our eyes, it was Raleigh Christian Academy that had us thinking and intrigued with players you will want to remember.
Last year, RCA finished 10-13 overall but had a nice mixture on the team, mostly made up of non-seniors. Now, with another year under their belt and a few new names that have come in, Raleigh Christian Academy looks to be a team that some may want to have their eyes on. When watching them compete in Week 1 of the Fall League, a few names really stood out.
First, 2023 Nicholas Anthony is one to really keep an eye on this season especially with the season he is coming off of. Averaging around 30 minutes of play, the 6’3 guard posted impressive numbers of 25.8ppg, 7.4rpg, 8.8apg, and 3.4spg last year. And he looks like one of the clear leaders once again for RCA, as he was able to create well for himself, get by defenders consistently, knock down tough shots from all levels, and really impact the game on all levels. Anthony is one that college coaches need to take a look at more this upcoming season for sure.
Senior 6’2 Quaevon Anderson wasn’t able to play in Week 1 but is coming off a strong season as well (12.3ppg, 7.1rpg) and should provide that senior leadership for this group. Then we had a few younger prospects that captured our eyes with their play, with the first being 2024 6’1 Gabriel Marquis. Marquis is such a shifty guard that was able to create well off the dribble and get to the basket regularly throughout Week 1. He plays with a great pace, sees the floor well, and can really help offensively with Anthony for RCA; he is going to be one to jot down as well this season. Then you have a young 6’7 freshman in Preston Copeland, who had flashes on the floor and should see an increased role with his mobility, his touch, and his impact down low as he only will get stronger.
Raleigh Christian Academy was a little bit of a surprise when watching them but there is a lot of intrigue going into this season. With the coaching staff that is there and the talent they have, RCA is one that could make a little more noise in the 2021-22 season and will be fun to watch.
