Phenom Hoops traveled to Virginia back in late February to check in on multiple teams playing in the VISAA playoffs. One team that caught our attention with their play was Life Christian Academy, a program that ended up winning the Division III VISSA Basketball Championship. On the court stood an intriguing 6’10 prospect in Will Henderson, a junior that showed off a lot of unique skills that you don’t always see with someone for at his size.
But then you learn his back story, which could be a huge reason why schools are starting to flock his way.
“Initially, I did play shooting guard and three years ago I started growing, so I was moved to a combo. Two years ago, I moved to center which was very awkward for me because I was so used to handling the ball and shooting. So, I got with a trainer and learned post moves and more ballhandling. This year, my coach didn’t know where to play me so later in the season, he allowed me to play the three and four, and that allowed me to progress tremendously with my game.”
With Henderson playing multiple positions over the last few years, it has allowed him to keep his guard-like skills and be a threat from multiple areas, while also using his length to be a threat on both ends down low. Henderson also says it has helped him increase his IQ and understanding of position on the court. His primary focus is to play the forward position but he has been able to expand his game by bringing the ball up the court off the rebound, showing his versatility as well as his ability to stretch the floor.
His game has helped him earn offers from Norfolk State and now Southern Utah, offers that he is blessed to have as he continues to enjoy the recruiting process.
He also has been hearing from schools like Iona, Old Dominion, Hampton, VCU, Virginia Tech, Western Kentucky, Boston College, UConn, and few others.
“They’ve been building a relationship with me and my family, discussing the positions of interest,” Henderson told Phenom Hoops. “I think UConn, VCU, and Virginia Tech are my strongest three.”
After a season in which he averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks, Henderson made himself known throughout the state with his unique game and abilities. And with another offer on the table, could more jump on board with his game soon' May be time to start really keeping on eye on the 6’10 junior.
