Each year, several prospects from South Carolina burst onto the scene and start quickly capturing attention. Although we know the Palmetto State is loaded with prospects, people still tend to generally overlook the talent it produces. Abijah Franklin is a prime example. Our first viewing of the 6-foot-5 wing came last April during the Phenom Rise Showcase. He played with Team USC and clearly stood out as their focal point. Considering everything he showcased, it didn’t take long to recognize his appeal as a Division I player. Franklin would collect seven offers throughout the summer before committing to Furman in August.
However, it’s unclear if anyone could’ve anticipated this level of production and pure dominance. Franklin is averaging 33.3 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 2.4 APG, and 2.6 SPG while shooting 48% from the floor. Given those numbers, it’s unsurprising that Wren is currently 14-3 and first in their regional standings. He’s totaled five double-doubles and notched the 40-point mark five times—yet no one seems to be talking about it. To reiterate: Franklin has scored over 40 the same number of times (5) as he’s scored under 30. That’s ridiculous. The production alone (particularly within the South Carolina public school ranks) is impressive, but the fact that it’s translating to wins speaks to Franklin’s leadership.
There should be a lot of optimism surrounding Franklin going forward. He’s already shown the ability to be a primary option in various settings. Franklin possesses a strong blend of IQ, skill, and athleticism with terrific size and toughness. He’s an excellent rebounder and versatile defender who can guard multiple positions. Franklin utilizes his length and physicality to overwhelm opponents in several ways. He’s also an excellent penetrator and downhill threat in transition. Franklin makes smart, unselfish decisions with the ball and is comfortable dictating the action as a main creator. Currently amid an incredible senior campaign, Furman fans should be very excited about Franklin’s arrival next season.
