College basketball is a fascinating game. There are many variables and entertaining subplots to monitor as these young men look to transition from high school to college. Each individual has their respective journey, and there’s no real way to predict how things will unfold—no matter how sure or unsure things may seem. Guys outperform and underperform expectations every single year. That being said, it’s impressive to see the gradual emergence of Shane Fernald at Hampden-Sydney.
Although Adam Brazil is still the focal point and likely favorite for POY honors, Fernald has clearly blossomed into a significant piece for the Tigers. While production typically comes through opportunity, the 6-foot-7 forward has more than doubled his averages in all major statistical categories. He’s way more involved in the offense yet maintaining (or increasing) his efficiency from all areas on the floor. This season, Fernald is averaging 12.3 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 3.5 APG, and 1.0 SPG with 57/36/63 shooting splits. In looking at the entire ODAC, Fernald ranks in scoring (20), rebounding (6), field goal percentage (6), assists (7), assist/turnover ratio (5), blocks (29), and steals (34).
Though his production would be impressive by itself, he’s putting up these numbers on the eighth-ranked team in the country. Fernald is a highly skilled player who has always found ways to cause matchup problems for opposing forwards. He’s a terrific passer, quality finisher, capable shooting threat, and strong rebounder who utilizes his body well on both ends of the floor. Fernald’s smooth, unselfish approach to the game has always been conducive to winning basketball, and that’s visibly translated for the Tigers. Expect him to keep turning heads as one of the most productive players in the ODAC and a major x-factor for one of the best Division III teams across the country.
