This past weekend, Phenom Hoops had the opportunity to watch some young, up-and-coming stars from the Jr. EYBL. Despite only a few game slots, there were a ton of notable prospects on display. It’s arguable that evaluating these kids prior to the start of their respective high school careers is the most important time to project potential growth. We could create a long list of prospects we watched in middle school who eventually became notable players at the college and professional levels. That being said, Bentley Lusakueno of Alabama Fusion and Pace Academy was among the most intriguing and enticing long-term prospects in attendance.

It doesn’t take long to notice the appeal from a visual standpoint, as Lusakueno stands at 6-foot-9 with a lanky frame and incredibly long arms. He moves extremely well for his size, especially at this stage in his development, and possesses nice burst athletically. Lusakueno showcased a lot of appealing flashes, both from a skill and defensive standpoint. He comfortably operated around the basket, finishing with touch, playing above the rim, and displaying great vision. Lusakueno was comfortable posting up, attacking off the bounce, or spotting-up from along the perimeter. Although his array of skills certainly warrant excitement, his instincts and upside defensively are worth noting. Between his motor, timing, and nose for the ball, Lusakueno already makes a consistent impact as a rebounder and shot-altering presence. He also runs the floor effectively in transition.

Although so much of a young player’s (especially big men) is contingent upon work ethic and physical development, it’s pretty easy to see the path with Lusakueno. His combination of size, athleticism, and flashes of skill should easily make him one of the more tantalizing, high-upside prospects in the Class of 2028. Expect Lusakueno to make a lot of noise over these next few years.
