The Pirates of East Carolina certainly have familiar names for Phenom Hoops, and though we have discussed already one of their stars in Ezra Ausar, junior RJ Felton is starting off the season really strong for the Pirates and giving this team another strong weapon.

The 6’3 guard from South Carolina was able to get some good experience as a freshman at ECU and elevated his play as a sophomore last year, averaging 13.8 points and 4.5 rebounds.  And though it is early, the junior guard is coming out of the gates in a big way for East Carolina, posting averages of 21 points 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 2.0 steals per game to start the season.

When you talk about this young man, Felton has always been an assertive, intense, and competitive guard on the court; one could see that in high school. His ability to be strong and athletic, finish through contact, get to the line, and be a playmaker on the court has been impressive, and he couldn’t ask for a better start to the season. Shooting nearly 55 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from three, Felton continues to add and develop, and is clearly looking to make a statement as well as elevate the ECU program this season.

What Was Said By Phenom Hoops:

“He’s a strong, athletic, aggressive two-way guard prospect that offers instant offense and phenomenal defensive intensity. Felton is the ultimate competitor and can control the game in a variety of different ways. Coach Simmons on Felton: “Russ is just a beast! He has so many different skills but his motor and downright will might be his most impressive qualities. You are not stopping him from getting to his spots. He has a body like a tight end but is agile and graceful with a blend of power. He will posterize opponents if they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. He has an all-around game that just screams out next-level. I believe that Russ is a must-have as a coach. You need a guy like him on your squad. He brings energy, enthusiasm, and the flat-out will to win. He’s always positive and a pleasure to coach. He also brings it on every possession on defense and if he gets in the passing lanes, it’s going to be a highlight on the other end. I believe after his performance today, he has established himself as an elite player and should really be on the radar.” Felton was undeniably impressive, securing the camp MVP with relative ease, and looks poised for a big-time upcoming season at Aiken.” – SC Top 80 evaluation
