Phenom Hoops travelled to Charlotte, North Carolina to cover open gym at Chambers High School. Coach Brian Frasier has done a magnificent job over the years at Chambers. Playing in one of the most competitive basketball conferences in the state, Coach Frasier is strictly about providing the biggest challenges his team can face, hopefully to prepare them for a state title run and this year is no different. First of all, there is no coach at the public school level who is willing to play one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the state. All coaches want to have the best possible record and Coach Frasier is no different, but he has and will be willing to sacrifice wins in order to give his team the best competition available, and not many coaches are willing to play the schedule he has for the 2023-24.

First of all, Coach Frasier opens up the season on November 18th against the defending NCISAA 4A state champion, Christ School. Other non-conference games on the schedule include Caldwell Academy, Salisbury, Central Cabarrus (State Champion), United Faith, Northside Christian (State Champion), and Greensboro Day (State Champion).  All the non-conference opponents are defending state champions or have the opportunity to win a state championship. Playing this brutal schedule along with the likes of North Mecklenburg, West Charlotte, and Hopewell, Chambers will be battle-tested come playoff time. More importantly, Coach Frasier is sending a clear and loud message that Chambers is ready to be in the conversation as the one public school that will not back down from a challenge. Now, let’s take a look at this roster for the upcoming season.

Top Returners

6’7 ’24 Maurio Hanson

Last season, Hanson averaged 14.8 PPG, 6.8 RPG, and 3.1 APG. While standing at 6’7, Hanson plays much bigger (6’9 wingspan) than his listed height. He has passer-friendly hands, is a willing passer out of the post, and has outstanding vision where he is often utilized at the high post for initiating the offense. While Hanson has outstanding footwork in the post, he also has the ability to step out and knock down midrange jumpers along with occasional 3-pointers.

6’4 ’24 Jordan Patton

Simply put, Patton is a “jack of all trades” type of player. He just does so many things well and is one of the more complete players in the state. He can dribble, pass and shoot, but more importantly is an excellent rebounder for his size. Last season, Patton averaged 12.6 PPG, 7.2 RPG, and 1.8 APG. The “Do it all” guard also makes his mark on the defensive side of the ball. He has long arms (6’6 wingspan) and excellent lateral quickness and could become one of the area’s top defensive players. For Patton, whether it’s on defense or offense, his footprint will be noticed on both ends of the court.

Star on the Rise

6’5 ’26 Tarris Bouie

Go ahead and mark it down, Tarris Bouie will be one of the most improved players in the state regardless of class and is the next future star to come out of Chambers. While Bouie only averaged 3.0 PPG last season, look for his role to expand. Sporting an enormous 6’9 wingspan and still growing, don’t be surprised to see him 6’8+ with a 7’2 wingspan before his senior year. While he is super long and thin, he has tremendous upside and potential. The scary part, Bouie is just in the “infant stages” of his growth and development as a basketball player. He can hit the midrange, step out and consistently knock down 3-pointers and even rise up and bang over defenders with moves to the rim.

Top Newcomer

6’5 ’26 Markus Kerr

While Kerr sat out open gym yesterday due to an injury, we have seen enough of Kerr to know, that he along with Bouie are future stars in the state for their class. Kerr is really young for his grade as he just turned 15 recently. Kerr also has excellent length (6’8 wingspan) and has plenty of room for growth. It’s no secret that Kerr is going to be a special player. He has all the offensive tools, skill set, length and athleticism to be an elite national-level prospect.

Surprise Player of the Day

6’4 ’26 Cameron Thompson

Standing 6’4 with a 6’7 wingspan, Thompson quickly grabbed our attention with his hustle, intensity, and defensive tenacity. In addition, Thompson showcased an all-around game and proved he too can be a three-level scorer.

Best of the Rest

6’0 2025 Kamari Cook

Quick on quick point guard who has outstanding speed in the open court.

6’0 2025 JD Terrell

Another long, athletic player (6’4 wingspan) who will make contributions on both sides of the ball.

Outlook

Coach Brian Frasier definitely has talent and a lot of depth. The roster is a nice blend of veteran seniors (Hanson & Patton) with super sophomores (Kerr & Bouie), not to mention quality depth at the guard position. Naturally, being in the Queen City Athletic Showcase, Chambers has to get over arch-rival North Mecklenburg. Last year, they split regular season conference games, each winning on the road. In our opinion, the NCHSAA 4A will come down to three teams, defending NCHSAA 4A state champion Myers Park, North Mecklenburg and Chambers. They are playing one of the most difficult schedules in the state, if not the toughest, therefore their overall record may take a few hits along the way. That being said, Chambers has a quality starting five and adequate depth to make a title run.

Challenges

For coach Brian Frasier, he will need seniors Maurio Hanson and Jordan Patton to step up and provide senior leadership by being more vocal on the court, not to mention being more focused down the stretch in close games. That being said, the talent is definitely there and if the stars are all aligned, they could see themselves playing for a state championship with Myers Park and North Mecklenburg standing in the way.
