Each and every time Phenom Hoops gets to report or sees a commitment from a player we have seen over the years, it is always a fantastic day.  It is great to see players achieve their goal to play at the next level and it is such a great accomplishment for that player.

Here is the latest commitment.

Player: Andrew Grimes
Class: 2025
Committed to: Liberty

Game Breakdown and What He Brings:

Grimes is a player that I’m really interested in watching more this upcoming high school season, but Phenom Hoops was also one of the first to recognize the talent and intrigue he has with his game.  Grimes continued to go about his business, bring production to the table, and be a player who continues to add more and develop nicely.  When we first watched him, he showed flashes of his size, his touch, his athleticism, and his ability to make plays off the dribble.  When talking to him last year, he has only continued to add more levels and expand his game, which should only carry more into this season.  Grimes is one that may not get all the attention as others do in that class, but could be a really sneaky get for the program. Again, we believe that he will only continue to develop, so this could be a very underrated get for the program in the coming years.

What Was Said by Phenom:

“He has the early size that stands out as a freshman at 6’6 and still growing, as well as a very nice, fluid feel down in the post.  He understands how to post up on the block and make himself available, showing nice touch and athleticism down in the paint.  But then, he can surprise you with his handles for a forward, displaying nice comfort level in bringing the ball up at times, pushing in transition, or creating nicely for himself.”

“I’m way more aggressive than last year, a lot stronger and faster. And I can score on two levels but I’m still working on my 3-point shot but it’s definitely there.  I want to become a wing eventually but still play the forward position because I know I’m still strong and have a great post-hook. But I know that I can expand my game to a higher more elite level. I don’t move like regular forwards or big men.”

“Grimes is an interesting forward prospect as he’s very productive as a scorer and defender and he still has plenty of room to grow before he hits his ceiling. He averaged 17p/7r/2b this past winter for Clayton, earning himself a spot on our All-GNRC 1st Team and GNRC All-Defensive Team. His base value comes as a rim-running big man that can protect the paint at a high level, but Grimes has shown that he can expand beyond that. While he only shot 23% from three last year, the FT% (76% on 114a) and his fluid mechanics give reason to believe that he’ll be a valuable shooter sooner rather than later. He’s an active rebounder with a solid motor and good instincts. He’s improving rapidly as a fluid mover with some real flashes being shown last season, especially when he was in the open court. He looked very comfortable handling the ball and creating for himself in spurts, a trait that should be looked at closely this season. As a post threat, he knows how to properly seal and can score in isolated back-to-basket matchups with relative efficiency. There are a lot of variables that seem to be right on the edge of a breakthrough for Grimes, which should make for an intriguing winter.”
