What Was Recently Said:
After watching his growth over the recent years, it’s easy to see Johnson’s steady progression as an overall prospect. He’s a long, fluid big man with a reliable, fairly well-rounded identity for his size/position. Johnson has the necessary touch to finish through contact, above the rim, or with either hand out of the post. He lurks well for putbacks and understands how to capitalize when receiving drop-offs in the dunker spot. Johnson can also pass or knock down the occasional perimeter jumper if necessary. Defensively, he contains his assignment well, alters shots on a consistent basis, and rebounds the ball at a healthy rate. He runs the floor well in transition and shows a solid willingness to make hustle plays as a big man. There’s still plenty of upside remaining, but one can clearly see how much he’s already improved over the recent years.
What To Expect:
Given everything we’ve seen over the travel ball season, all signs point to Johnson having a breakout high school season. He’s a steady, reliable big man with a low-maintenance identity and quality feel on both ends of the floor. Johnson understands his identity as an interior piece and consistently plays to his strengths, as opposed to so many other post prospects who want to labeled as a “big guard.” He finishes well around the basket, moves properly without the ball, and is capable of working the two-man game as a roller or floor-spacing option. Johnson rebounds at a consistent rate, runs the floor well in transition, and knows how to make his presence felt defensively. Going into his junior season, he should shine as the nightly leader and clear focal point for Providence Day. Johnson has only gotten better and better, so college coaches would be wise to get involved sooner than later.
